Biblical theology is often oriented towards understanding the overarching narrative, or story, of the Bible. Within that larger story, Israels story in the OT plays a crucial role. Several years ago Jared Compton initiated this project by pointing out to Chris Bruno and Kevin McFadden that the NT summarizes the story of Israel in a number of different ways with unique emphases that often go unnoticed. Our goal in this study is to consider these infrequently noticed summaries to glean a better understanding of the biblical theology of the apostles themselves. We will suggest that the NT offers a biblical-theological rule of faith that can guide our own biblical theology, providing a framework within which we can both do faithful biblical theology and OT interpretation with the grain of the earliest Christians. While our hope is that many interpreters of Scripture will benefit from this book, we cannot apologize for our view of both the OT and NT as Christian Scripture, revelation from God for which we are ultimately accountable before him.

This book is the fruit of a number of years of research and conversation among us three authors. The ideas in several of the chapters have been tested in different conference and classroom settings, and we are thankful for the input we have received along the way. We are especially grateful to the students from Chriss biblical theology and use of the OT in the NT courses at Bethlehem College and Seminary. The conclusions of the book were hammered out over a few long, gruelling (but enjoyable) days together in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where we were able to work through the whole manuscript and get onto the same page (well, mostly the same page). We are grateful to the Lord for giving us unity in this project and for strengthening us to finish it.

Thanks are due to many others who have contributed to this book along the way. Don Carson, the editor of this series, provided valuable guidance and input at various stages of the project. Philip Duce at Inter-Varsity Press has been a generous and gracious help (as he endured a number of delays in the submission of the manuscript). Much the same, in fact, could be said for our skilful and diligent copy editor, Eldo Barkhuizen. John Biegel, Bruce Compton, Joel Compton, Justin Denney, Joe McCulley, Tyler Rodkey, Patrick Schreiner, Tom Schreiner and Mike Stanislawski read portions of the manuscript and provided valuable input. Jenny Andrus, Cody Irwin, Joe McCulley and Katrina Selby were great helps in formatting and editing portions of the manuscript. Cody Irwin went above and beyond the call of duty in helping to prepare the indices. Jared Compton wishes to express his thanks to the staff at University of St Mary of the Lake for their kind hospitality, Chris Bruno thanks Barbara Winters and the staff at Bethlehem College and Seminarys library for their research help, and Kevin McFadden is grateful to Stephanie Kaceli and the staff at Cairn Universitys Masland Library for their support, as well as the staff at the Princeton Theological Seminary Library for their exceptional hospitality.

We are especially grateful for the institutional support we have received to finish this project. The leadership team at CrossWay Community Church generously gave Jared Compton time to work on this project, and the administrative and academic leadership at Bethlehem College and Seminary have been very supportive of Chris Bruno. Kevin McFadden wishes to thank his former provost Brian Toews and dean Jonathan Master for carving out time in his schedule for this project as well as his colleagues in the school of divinity at Cairn University for helping to teach some of his classes and for encouraging him along the way.
