Introduction

At its core, minimalism is all about getting more with less. Its more than just an aesthetic choice, but it is rather a philosophical decision. Digital minimalism is all about choosing reduced dependence on the internet, your smartphones, computers, and other devices, and regain control over your intentions, focus, and freedom to choose.

This book was inspired by lessons and ideas that I learned and practiced as Cal Newport presented them in his book Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World.

I hope you dont mind if I chime in with him in saying that digital minimalism is indeed a philosophy that centers on technology use. I also think that we all should practice digital declutter, deprive ourselves of solitude from time to time, control our social media exposure (if not to remove it completely), and prioritize real-world experience over the synthetic associations in the digital world.

In this book, I only touch on the impact of digital media on adults and kids. I even present some numbers to prove the points that have been raised. However, I do not deal heavily with the subject of technology addiction in this book since Cal Newport has already done such a wonderful job at it. In other words, there is no need to reinvent the wheel.

What I would rather like to present in this work are actionable steps, tips, and tricks that you can do yourself so you can handle the challenges of technology addiction on your terms in your daily life.

This is a book for the average folks who cant always understand psychological and other technical terms. A lot of effort has been made to ensure that this book is jargon-free as much as possible. However, where jargon has been used in these pages, it is accompanied by explanations that can be understood by everyday folks.

This book focuses on how to live a digital minimalist lifestyle. I have also borrowed a few concepts from Newport to explain how digital media and technology affect us human beings. On the other hand, I depart from the theoretical base that he introduced, and emphasized on how you can apply digital minimalism for everyday situations.

For instance, section two of this book begins with doing a digital inventory and declutter. It is then followed up by strategies for doing a digital detox. You will also learn mindfulness techniques that will help you stay focused and present with your current situation.

Other techniques and strategies, to include going on a tech sabbatical, doing art therapy, creative work, and digital communication will be covered.

Remember that it takes time to form new habits and get rid of the old. That is why the strategies and techniques you will learn here are not one-time quick fixes. You need to spend time trying them and practicing them so they become a part of the new you.

Section 1
Defining and Understanding Concepts
Chapter 1: What Is Digital Minimalism?

Minimalism is a word that gets thrown around a lot these days. One version of this philosophy or way of life is called digital minimalism. But before we go into its digital aspects, we need to learn what minimalism really is.

Understanding the core concepts of a minimalist lifestyle will help you understand what digital minimalism is.

What Is Minimalism Anyway?

You may have heard people describe what a minimalist lifestyle is. Some say that it means you can only own around a hundred things and nothing more. Others would say that minimalism means that you will have to quit your career.

As you try to go over the myriad of descriptions, you might think that its some kind of mystical or exotic way of living. The pictures of minimalist homes look really inviting.

However, living life by starting a blog, not having children, and not owning a phone sounds like way too far-fetched for ordinary folks like you and me. But here is one thing that I would like to emphasize:

A minimalist lifestyle isnt like that.

Those are not what minimalism is all about, frankly speaking. Some people might dismiss minimalism as some sort of home organization fad. Some people might even think that it is a lifestyle that is too restrictive.

Some people say they cant switch to a minimalist lifestyle because of the so-called rules and restrictions mentioned above. Just remember that being a minimalist isnt about any of those things. Sure, if you want to live with less clutter in your life, then practicing minimalism can help. But that isnt the point.
