Preface
Preface
What a useful book!
What a valuable aid for priests, educators, parents, and anyone desiring help with problems caused by the Devil, understanding his existence, and recognizing his action!
Within these pages we find a catechism on the mission of Jesus Christ , who came to liberate us from the power of the Evil One, to establish the Kingdom of God, and to bring us to full communion with Him and with one another.
The author makes an excursus from Sacred Scripture to the Churchs Magisterium , showing readers how Jesus and His Church are aware of Satans presence and of how he tempts man to do evil.
In a detailed analysis the author describes how the action of the Evil One takes shape in the life of a person. Then he points out the means necessary to combat him and turn him away.
For priests and for families of those who have spiritual problems , but without claiming to have exhausted all practical suggestions, the author gives concrete examples showing how to accompany and help the afflicted.
His language is clear, direct, and precise, unencumbered by roundabout expressions. At times, readers may feel a little annoyed, especially those who have never had experience with exorcisms or have never been in contact with loved ones who have been tormented by the Evil One.
Some readers may even think that some assertions here are exaggerated, but those who have had these experiences will not have any difficulty recognizing the truth and objectivity of what Fr. Carlin describes.
This is also a useful book for those who know nothing about the Devil, vexations, obsessions, and possessions . In it we have a guide that helps us to keep the door closed to Satan, to make life choices according to Gods law, and to be extremely prudent and clever before the subtle tempter.
In particular, the text shows that there are persons, places, practices, and philosophies that must be avoided in order not to compromise our spiritual and human life.
In all, the author helps us to understand how to live our earthly life in health and serenity and to reach the eternal life that Jesus promised.
Readers of this book will come to understand how important it is for all of us to live a life of faith in Christ, listening to Him in the Gospel, dialoguing with Him and with Mary and the saints in prayer, and meeting Him in the sacraments and in participation in the ecclesial life.

Act of Consecration to Mary
Mary,
Mother of Christ and of the Church,
we consecrate ourselves to you,
and we entrust to you our lives,
our families and our work.
O Mother, give to your sons and daughters
that inexhaustible capacity to love
that bursts from the pierced side of the Crucified One.
Mary, luminous morning Star,
placed by God on the horizon of humanity,
extend your mantle over us,
pilgrims on the paths of time
among multiple risks and snares,
and come to our aid
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
St. John Paul II
Introduction
In this century that bridges two millennia, we find ourselves living in an obviously satanic culture and a modernity tied to hypertransgressions, nihilism, materialism, and the occult. Today the Devil is gradually losing his fearful bearing and becoming an ally of those who desire magical power or illusory knowledge, which used to be eclipsed by faith in the only God and His Church.
Satanism is the extreme form of transgression and rebellion; it is the pursuit of magical powers and control over others and over ones own evolution. Many adolescents, left to themselves, are wearing the five-pointed star, the cross turned upside down, and the number 666 (the name of the beast). They use drugs; surround themselves with obscure, deadly symbols; play games that evoke demons; and listen to music that extols dissolution, violence, and the powers of darkness.
There is no longer a distinction between good and evil. Everything is looked for in man, and power is sought in the gods. Many cling to beliefs in the magical hidden powers that were practiced in the Renaissance and to the occultism of the 1600s and 1700s. One synthesis worked out by Freemasonry describes mans aspiration to become like God through secret initiations and ceremonies that seek to recover mans omnipotence in the Garden of Eden before the Fall.
Occultism is a network of intercommunicating sects and groups. A person accepted by many of these groups can practice a kind of esoteric nomadism. Added to these is the philosophy and practice of esoteric oriental beliefs, which center and divinize man in the universe, giving him control over energies that go beyond his nature.
