Foreword
by 1988 Olympic Taekwondo Gold Medalist, Arlene Limas;

Krav Maga, the most battle tested fighting system in the world! WOW! Sounds pretty intimidating. That was one of my first thoughts when contemplating bringing Krav Maga into my students training regimen. But these thoughts quickly subsided while training with Mark Slane. His approach to teaching and training was and is, no nonsense and practical, leaving students confident in their skills. Marks approach to Krav Maga encompasses physical skills, a commitment to training and fitness, and a demand for mental toughness, which makes ones training the most bang for your buck!!! You are quickly confident in your skills and have the mind set to back them up. Marks background in other martial arts allows him the insight and opportunity to constantly grow his American Krav Maga system. He recognizes that if it worksbring it into the fold! A forward thinking approach, a precise message, and a great curriculum makes Marks American Krav Maga a no brainer!

Enjoy his book, enjoy training in American Krav Maga, and enjoy being prepared!

i
Preface/History
What do we mean by American Krav Maga? The very words Krav Maga are Hebrew meaning Contact Combat. The system was developed in Israel by an Israeli, Imi Lichtenfeld.

Imi taught hand to hand techniques in the military but the system was never called Krav Maga while he was in the IDF. Imi came up with that name in 1971, five years after he retired from the military and was teaching civilians. Imi actually wanted Krav Maga to be the Hebrew Martial Art. It was meant to be practiced in gis, belts were worn, there was bowing and the techniques were to be called by their Hebrew names, no matter where taught. I was told that Krav Maga was supposed to be ever changing and updated. Grandmaster Yaron Lichtenstein told me this was false. That When Michelangelo finished the David he did not leave a hammer and chisel there for someone else to make better.

All organizations are teaching Krav Maga techniques, but not the art. Most have thrown together military hand to hand techniques and call it Krav Maga. In American Krav Maga we are using many of Imis techniques as well as other techniques developed in Israel but we are not teaching Imis Krav Maga. We are teaching an Americanized version of Krav Maga that we call American Krav Maga. Many of our techniques, tactics, etc. have been developed with the help of U.S. army rangers, SEALS, Swat team leaders, etc. We believe that if a better technique is found (easier, more effective, etc.) that we must change to that technique. We have no grand master to bow to or an art to keep purewe are only about keeping our practitioners as safe as possible!

By Americanizing the system we certainly mean no disrespect to the founder and we are not saying that we are making the system better. We at the United States Krav Maga Association have merely added, moved and tweaked techniques to make them as relevant, up to date and usable by the American population as they possibly can be. American Krav Maga is not a closed system but an evolving system. Our techniques are very close to what Imi developed and taught the Israeli Defense Forces. We dont claim to have improved anything. People in Israel in the 50s and 60s had different problems than we do today, had different forms of violence that they were likely to face and, basically, lived different lives. We have attempted
