The completion of this book provides the opportunity to acknowledge and thank so many who have helped in its preparation. This book began during a conversation one afternoon with Amos Funkenstein, who, after inquiring if I could read German and Greek, handed me a copy of one of his articles, and asked me if the few pages and footnotes he suggested I read reminded me of anything.
