Youve already taken one step forward toward a better future by merely opening up the book. Everyday we walk through life, pushing forward, making choices, settling on decisions, and powering through the tough moments. We do all of this while in the back of our minds we are coloring our hair, thinking about school lunches, trying to remember the doctor appointments we scheduled, and deciding whether to cook chicken or spaghetti for dinner.
Our brains are amazing, wonderful, and powerful parts of our bodies, but they can also be stubborn and controlling. When we choose to go through life making choices based on the ideals learned while we were children, hidden for most of our lives, we struggle with making unbiased decisions without even really knowing that were doing it.
What we dont realize is that those very thoughts are actually structured in our brains as a mental model. In other words, each thought is a naturally constructed mental model with no specific guidance on how we want things to steer. Within this book, youre going to have the chance to learn a lot about specific and purposeful types of models, as well as the best way to begin expanding your mind, boosting your productivity, and making better decisions.
Well start with Chapter One, giving a full clinical definition of mental models. This specific type of problem solving technique has been used for decades by some of the most well-known entrepreneurs in history. Of course, this isnt the first time anyone famous has talked about mental models. Warren Buffett has spoken of them for years, giving the models credit for a huge portion of his success throughout his life.
Continuing on in Chapter One, we will talk about the psychology behind mental models. We will list the seven principles of reason realized by Johnson-Lair and Savary in 1996. The models represent a base and a scientific infrastructure from which to conduct research. The principles also better explain the inner workings of the mental models. We will then finish up Chapter One with a brief explanation of why we use the models. This type of methodical tool has been adopted across almost all professions, including scientists, mathematicians, doctors, behaviorists, psychologists, and others. Corporations teach the power of mental models to employees and use them during team projects.
Once you have a good handle on what mental models are, youll be able to begin processing the different types of them that are out there. The thing about mental models that is different than other tactics used for productivity, problem solving, and decision making is the fact that these tools come from inside your head. You dont need to spend money on some system or extensive training; you conceive the model in your own mind and use it to reach your goals . Literally anyone can use mental models, but its not the fact that you can use them that is important; its how you use them that matters.
In Chapter Two, we begin by talking about improving your vision using the techniques employed in this book. We discuss the mental pictures that you can create in your head, and we discuss how many mental models are out there compared to the simple one that you use on a daily basis to solve your everyday small problems.
Chapter Two delves into the idea of immersing yourself in the multiple variations of mental moods. Its a fact that if you choose to use the one known and created mental model, you wont come anywhere near the options and benefits you would if you chose the mental model based on the project. One of the main reasons that we use mental models in problem solving and decision making is to allow ourselves to explore beyond what our normal minds would allow and to see the multitude of opportunities to solve a problem or make a decision. Issues in life are not black and white or cut and dry, so why would we use tactics to handle them that are?
It has long been said that a persons own view of the world or biases can be the killer of business decisions. Mental models help you to circumnavigate some of those issues. Further into Chapter Two, we will talk about some of the more widely used mental models and the principles of each. We cover common knowledge, diversification, game theory, anchoring heuristic, the illusion of control, tribalism, working backward, and homeostasis. While these are only a few of the hundreds, if not thousands of mental models out there, they are the most pertinent and widely used tactics.
Backtracking a bit to talk about human nature and our brains, Chapter Three will cover something that has affected even the most brilliant people. Cognitive bias can creep up on you in the strangest moments, and it can take affect without you ever realizing. Once you fully understand what cognitive bias is, you will be able to look back over the years and think about all of the situations in which you made a choice, now fully aware that it was based on your own personal biases. Its sometimes painful to look back, knowing that there were hundreds of other ways that decisions could have been made. With that being said, unfortunately, there is no time machine for a do-over.
We will also talk about how cognitive bias actually works in the chapter. Our minds are not infinite, and our brains can only hold so much data at one time. Therefore, when we begin to take in an overload of information, our brains push the other information out or stores it in our subconscious. However, your mind does not understand the difference between a fact about the current project and your distracted thoughts on the newest shoes from your favorite designer. What the brain does know is that there are chemical endorphins and upped serotonin levels that react in our bodies when we are thinking about something that we enjoy, and lets face it, the newest episode of Game of Thrones can be a heck of a lot more engaging for our brains then solving a problem.
