My Name,

T hree thousand five hundred years ago a shepherd walked away from the safety of his home and the love of his family to follow a calling that only he could hear. What he experienced, nearly a millennium and a half before the birth of Jesus, has become the source of the greatest divisions between nations, as well as the greatest unity between people; the reason for the darkest wars in history, as well as the strongest peace; the key to the deepest sense of belonging, and the most miraculous healings in history. The event that transpired on that day so long ago continues to shape our lives today.

Walking across the barren floor of the Egyptian desert, that lone pilgrim began a journey on behalf of all humans, past and present, not knowing whenor even ifhe would ever return. His pilgrimage led him to an ancient and desolate mountaintop rising more than 7,000 feet above sea level. We can only wonder if he sensed that the ground under his feet would become one of the most sacred, and controversial, places on Earth.

The mountain was Sinai.

The mans name was Moses.

When he reached the mountaintop, Moses spoke with God.

And if such a conversation wasnt extraordinary enough, before he returned to those he left behind, Moses did the unthinkable. He asked God a question. But not just any question. He asked the one question that had to be asked if his experience was to be accepted by the people of his timeand remain meaningful to us today. Addressing the Deity that would later give him the Law of the Ten Commandments, Moses asked God to reveal His name! Today, three and a half millennia later, were still talking about Gods answer.

In what can only be described as one of the most profound, mysterious, and compassionate revelations of human history, God answered Moses with the actual sound of the heavenly code that had never been shared on Earth before that moment: the sound of His personal namethe Divine Name. And this is what makes Mosess experience unique. Historical records suggest that he is the only one of us who has ever heard Gods personal name spoken on Earth by God Himself. And just so there would be no doubt as to precisely what it was that he had heard, Moses was given a written record of his conversation with Goda hard copy containing the code by which we may know God in this world.

Contrary to some theories suggesting that Moses transcribed his conversation with the Divine, the scholarly translation of the oldest record of that moment, the Torah, states that He [God] gave Moses the two tablets of the Pact, stone tablets inscribed with the finger of God (Exodus 31:18). The implications of this single statement are profound. The assertion that the tablets were inscribed with the finger of God removes any doubt as to Who was doing the writing. The words came directly from Whoever or whatever God is.

Rather than the general names that biblical texts often use to describe the character or attributes of God, such as El Elyon (God Most High), El Shaddai (God Almighty), or I Am, God revealed a unique, direct, tangible, and very personal name through his gift to Moses. In Exodus 3:15, God describes the significance of what he has done, stating:

This shall be My name forever,
This My appellation for all eternity.

For more than three millennia since that time, the Divine Name has been welcomed, protected, misused, worshipped, feared, celebrated, sung, intoned, chanted, and hidden from the masses. In later translations of the Torah, Gods name was removed in 6,800 instances and replaced with substitute terms that were meant to identify the unspeakable name of God without stating it directly. Even today, the speaking or writing of the name revealed to Moses is prohibited in some Orthodox religious traditions. The question is: why? What is it about the ancient and personal name of God that could possibly hold such power that it warrants such strict rules and guidelines? The answer to that question is where this book, The Divine Name, comes in.

Throughout the many years I have known Jonathan Goldman as a colleague and friend, many of our weekly conversations have revolved around the topic of the Divine Name. Our friendship and deep reverence for the power of this ancient code became even deeper with the discovery that Gods ancient name is encoded in the DNA of all life (see my book
