DescriptionA unique commentary on the preliminary practices of Vajrayna Buddhism, from a beloved Nyingma master.A Chariot to Freedom is one of the most beloved presentations of the preliminary practices, or ngndro, that form the foundation of the Vajrayna Buddhist path. This set of practices, common to all schools of Himalayan Buddhism, is what nearly every practitioner begins with, yet it also constitutes a complete method in and of itself. Although ngndro are considered a prerequisite for further teachings and initiations into other practices, many of even the most accomplished masters continue to engage in them every day. Most of the other excellent works on these foundational techniques are specific to a particular tradition, but this text is widely considered to be exemplary, in part, because it is applicable to all traditions of ngndro. Drawing from the original words of the Buddha in the stras and from later treatises by such masters as Ngrjuna, Shntideva, and Guru Padmasambhava, Shechen Gyaltsaps commentary is a wonderfully curated anthology of Buddhist teachings on the preliminary practices of Vajrayna Buddhism. It covers the thoughts that turn ones mind away from ordinary pursuits and toward enlightenment, taking refuge, arousing the mind set on enlightenment (bodhichitta), purification, maala offering, and Guru Yoga.Shechen Gyaltsap explains why each practice is beneficial and provides profound and eminently useful guidance for practitioners, while simultaneously transmitting the wisdom of generations of Buddhist masters.ReviewShechen Gyaltsap was a master of exceptional experience and vast learning. . . .[T]his unique presentation of the preliminaries (ngndro) captures the essence of the entire Buddha Dharma. Anyone, from any background, will be able to apply it to their practice and derive great benefit from it. It is my sincere wish that whoever reads this book will take it to heart and blend it with their practice of meditation. The Seventh Shechen RabjamIn Vajrayna, the success of any practice comes down to the preliminary practices (ngndro). In A Chariot to Freedom, Shechen Gyaltsap Rinpoche . . . provides us with a wonderful guide. It lays the foundation of genuine meditation and allows the vast and profound teachings to unfold within our experience. I pray that this book will inspire you to traverse the spiritual path.Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi RinpocheOne day . . . Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche received in his room in Nepal a print of A Chariot to Freedom, which had been brought from Shechen Monastery in Eastern Tibet. He held it on top of his head and told us, To me, this book is more precious than all the gold in the world. Needless to say, to now have this text beautifully translated into English is an invaluable gift to all dharma practitioners.Matthieu Ricard, author of Enlightened VagabondAbout the AuthorSHECHEN GYALTSAP (18711926) was one of Jamgn Mipham Rinpoches closest disciples and the root teacher of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. He was recognized at a very young age to possess the qualities of a bodhisattva and went on to become a devoted monk, scholar, and accomplished master of the Great Perfection, known for his warmth and simplicity. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche said that Shechen Gyaltsaps teachings were worth more than all the gold in the entire world.

J IGME K HYENTSE R INPOCHE

Among the many well-known Tibetan Buddhist teachers of the twentieth century, two in particularDzongsar Khyentse Chkyi Lodr Rinpoche and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpochestand out for the vast influence that they exerted on the entire tradition. From the many great lamas who were their disciples down to the most humble practitioners, no one was impervious to the wisdom, compassion, and ability of these two great beings. All who met them were soothed by their kindness, comforted by their wisdom, and disarmed by their power. Even to this day, decades after these teachers passed away, we can still see and feel the effects of their blessing. Now both Dzongsar Khyentse Chkyi Lodr Rinpoche and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche were disciples of Shechen Gyaltsap Rinpoche, a master of immense learning and compassionate power, the heart son of the great Jamgn Mipham. They both looked up to him as the Buddha in person, and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche in particular regarded him as his most precious root teacher.

I remember when I was once in the room of my most precious root guru Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche in Bhutan. I noticed a newly printed text and asked him what it was. Rinpoche told me to take it down from the shelf and said that I could keep it. It was an offset print of Gyaltsap Rinpoches commentary on the preliminary practices that, at that time, had only recently been brought out of Tibet. As Rinpoche gave it to me, he said that the book was more precious to him than all the riches of the world. It was the text that has been translated here, the text that you are holding in your hands.

In this time of turmoil, it is such an amazing good fortune even to hear the name of this book, let alone to be able to read, study, and put it into practice. So I am deeply grateful not only to Shechen Gyaltsap Rinpoche, the inestimable author, but also to our teachers, the translators, the publisher, and the sponsor who have made this translation possible. I pray that they live long and continue their excellent work. And on behalf of all the readers who will study and benefit from this book, I thank them from my heart.

P EMA W ANGYAL

It is truly beyond words that such a precious and wonderful book as this has been made accessible in our time, and it is an incredibly great honor and fortune for the Padmakara Translation Group to have translated it. This book is a distillation of the teachings and practices that have come down to us from Buddha Shkyamuni, Guru Rinpoche, Longchenpa, and the masters of the lineage.

The text is taken from the writings of Shechen Gyaltsap Rinpoche, which in total amount to over twenty volumes. Among all of them, it was this particular volume, containing the text of the Namdrol Shingta (A Chariot to Freedom), that was Kyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoches favorite. Whenever he taught, there would always be some trace of this book in what he said. This is why, when we read or study this book, we can be reminded of the atmosphere of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoches teachings.

With the Cultural Revolution, this book became exceedingly rare, and then, like many other texts, was thought to have been lost. Nobody knew that one copy had in fact been preserved in a cave. This copy was finally brought to Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, who became so happyjust having the book brought into his presence moved him so much that tears of joy came to his eyes. From then on, until further copies of the book were printed, he would always keep it close to him; he cherished it so much. He used to say that if one has the fortune to study this book, it is really like studying the Buddhas teachings in their entirety.
