All rights reserved. Foreword, Hello, this book is intended for the beginner/intermediate guitarist. Many guitarists learn scales in one position which is great, but this can limit their ability to play up and down the neck, this book will give you a selection of scales to focus on in two positions on the fretboard. The scales in this book include the major, minor, major pentatonic, and minor pentatonic scales, everything in this book is in the key of C major, which includes the A minor scales, the forms will be the same regardless of what key you choose to use them in. Lets begin. Introduction How to read this book Every scale is shown in a diagram above the staff.
Left hand: 2 4 1 2 4 1 3 4 The fingerings recommended The Red notes in the tab are to play each scale are shown the scales root note. underneath each tab. The Blue not es in the tab show where the first scale connects to the second scale. Scale diagrams The column on the left are the name of the guitar strings The white circles are the root notes of the scales The numbers at the bottom are the frets The fretboard diagrams are read the same as a chord char Part one C major scales What is a major scale? A major scale, like any other scale is a number of steps between two fixed notes,it is the basis for all music theory, it is the scale that every other scale is compared to,a whole step is when you play a note on a fret, skip over one fret, and play another not on the next fret, a half step is playing on one fret and then playing the fret directly next to it, for this case a C major scale, the steps are as follows. Intervals: 1-2-3-4-5-6Steps: Whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, halfNotes: C D E F G A B C Here is how it looks on a fretboard on only one string in one octave. And this is what that exact scale looks like in a very common form in the 3rdposition Here it is again only in the 5thposition and one octave higher.
This book focuses on connecting scales horizontally on the fretboard, some scales in this book can be played from root note to root note in two octaves without changing positions. But any scale starting on the 5th string has to move to a different position to do so.
