THE NEW JOHN G. LAKE SERMONS
BY DR. JOHN G. LAKE

The ministry of John G. Lake is unique in the twentieth century history of the church. The result of his five years of ministry in South Africa was the establishment of the Apostolic Church. Before leaving for that country, he was receiving one of the top salaries in the nation. But sickness in his family had taken away one after another of his brothers and sisters in death. His soul went out to God in an agony for deliverance. Finally God revealed to him the glorious truth of divine healing. It was the beginning of a new day. Mighty miracles occurred which brought healing and health to those of his family still living. One sister after she had actually expired was raised from the dead.

This experience of witnessing God's power revolutionized the life of John G. Lake. His ambitions to make money faded away. A tremendous hunger for God came in his heart. Even while engaged in business he preached night after night with great power and saw many saved and healed. But he was not satisfied. His soul reached out for more. Then after a period of waiting upon God for several months, he was baptized with the Holy Ghost and fire. He then determined to abandon himself to God. He sold everything he had and gave it to God's work in anticipation of God's call. The call came, and it was to Africa.

In Africa God gave him a revival unprecedented since the days of the apostles. The fire spread throughout the nation, and hundreds of churches were raised up. Miracles occurred of such magnitude as to amaze the world and gave him audience with many leaders of his time.

Returning from Africa to Spokane, Washington, his ministry is said to have resulted in 100,000 healings in a period of five years.

The first book of sermons entitled The John G. Lake Sermons on Dominion Over Demons, Disease, and Death has run through many editions. We trust this additional book of faith-building messages will have an equally enthusiastic reception.

CHAPTER I
The Second Crowning

And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon, And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne (Rev. 5:1-7).

Somehow the minds of men the world over have ever been concentrated around the cross of Christ. One of the strangest things to me in all Christian life has been the manner in which the souls of men cling to the cross of Calvary. And I have sometimes felt that it is one of the great reasons why there has been so little progress made in the higher Christian life.

While we revere the cross of Calvary, and while the soul of man will ever love to think of Him Who gave His life for us, yet I believe the triumph of the Christ began at the cross and ends only when the race like Himself has received from God the Father, through Him, the grace, power and glory of God that makes them sons of God like Himself.

It is a long way between the cross of Calvary and the throne of God, but that is the way Jesus traveled and that is the course for every other soul of man. I am glad that God is never hurried. He has plenty of time. A few years make much difference in this life, but God has plenty of time for the elevation of the soul, for the perfect tuition of every heart, until that heart comes into such complete and perfect unison that the nature of man is absolutely changed into the nature of Christ.

The triumph of Jesus, as we see it outlined in the Scriptures, has always been one of the splendid inspirations of my own soul. It seems to me if we had not been permitted to have that foreview of that final triumph of the Son of God, there might have been the conception in the minds of many that after all the life and death of our Lord Jesus Christ was not the perfect triumph that it ought to have been. It seems, therefore, that no one can have the highest appreciation of the real Christian life and the consciousness that real Christianity brings, unless he can see the triumph of the Christ.

If we stop to think that one-half of the great Christian world is still carrying a little cross representing a dead Christ, we will realize how the mind of man is yet chained to the cross of Calvary to a dead Christ, to a tombnot emptybut the tomb that contains the One they love.

Beloved, that is not Christianity. Christianity is the ringing triumph of the mind of God. It is the blessed victory that the individual feels in his own heart of the consciousness of the presence and power of God within the soul which makes man the master now, and gives him the consciousness of mastery over sin and over the powers of sickness and death.

I have always wondered how a Christian could be any less than an optimist. It is a sad thing when you hear Christians groan in their soul. When I meet the groaner, I say in my heart: God move the man on into the place where he comprehends what Christianity is.

In my early boyhood we worshipped in a little old church where the saints were having a hard time. I remember when the dear class leader one day said, It seems such a short time since I was a boy, and now I am on the western slope of the hill, halfway down. And he stopped and sniffed the air in a peculiar kind of way. To him there was nothing but gloom ahead.

The Christian with a groan in him never moved the world except to more groans. In a divine healing meeting some months ago, as I was teaching, I tried to develop the thought that as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. And I was endeavoring to show the people that the spirit of victory in Christ Jesus in ones heart not only affected the attitude of ones mind, but likewise his soul too. In fact, through the nervous system mans mental attitudes are transmitted clear through the body.

The attitude of our soul has much to do not only with our mental status and our spiritual life, but likewise with our physical health. Indeed it seems to me that as the spirit of man is tuned with God, all the outgrowth of his life will be in harmony with his spirit. The attitude of the mind will be in accordance, and the condition of the body will be a revelation of the attitude of his mind. That is the reason why I have always endeavored in my preaching to bring before the mind of man the consciousness of triumph, the consciousness of victory, the power of mastery. It seems to me there is a great deal of superficial endeavor in the world to pump ones self up, similar to a man taking himself by the bootstraps and trying to lift himself over the fence.

We speak of mastery, not because we are endeavoring to lift our consciousness into the place where we can possibly conceive of mastery, but because the spirit of mastery is born within the heart. The real Christian is a royal fighter. He is one who loves to enter into the contest with his whole soul and take the situation captive for the Lord Jesus Christ.
