The moral philosophers: an introduction to ethics: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "The moral philosophers: an introduction to ethics" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

This text adopts a historical approach to moral philosophy, taking in chronological sequence some of the major ethical philosophers of the past. Richard Norman introduces the thought of each figure as a coherent and comprehensive ethical theory, exploring their richness and complexity. Each theory is critically examined and presented as an attempt to surmount some of the deficiencies of its predecessors - and through this critical process the book moves towards some concluding suggestions about the content of an acceptable ethical theory. This edition includes four new chapters - one on Nietzsche, and three which provide substantially extended coverage of 20th-century moral philosophy, including discussions of contemporary utilitarianism, rights-based ethical theories, contractarian ethics and virtue ethics, and recent debates between realism and anti-realism in ethics.

PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION
A book such as this, aiming to cover a large area of philosophy, is bound to involve many intellectual debts. To those who taught me moral philosophy, those with whom I have taught moral philosophy, and those to whom I have taught moral philosophy, I am most grateful for all that I have learned from them and all the stimulation I have gained from them.
More specifically I should like to thank Chris Cherry, Bruce Landesman, Sean Sayers, and Tony Skillen for reading all or part of the first draft and making valuable comments, Karen Jones for all her help with the process of revision, and Sue Macdonald, Eileen Barker, Pat Evans, Yvonne Latham, and Jane Neame for their help with the typing.
When a previous book of mine on ethics was published, my landlady, to whom I gave a copy, commented 'It must be very goodI can't understand a word of it.' My hope is that, in this respect at least, the present book is less good.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
In this new edition the first eight chapters remain largely unchanged, with only some small additions and deletions and some minor rewording here and there. Chapters 9 to 11 of the first edition have, however, been replaced by the new Chapters 9 to 12. Two of the replaced chapters are those which dealt with the implications of Marxism and of psychoanalysis for moral philosophy. I have omitted them with some regret. I remain committed to the claims I made there about the importance of Marxist and psychoanalytic ideas, particularly because of the ways in which they call into question the very idea of 'morality' as traditionally conceived. The chapters as they stood, however, fitted uneasily into a book which is intended to be read alongside some of the standard texts of moral philosophy. Marx and Freud were not primarily moral philosophers and, important though their influence is, none of their writings can reasonably be given the status of a classic work of moral philosophy. In this edition the idea of a 'critique of morality' has been explored in a new chapter on Nietzsche. The renewed interest in Nietzsche's work in recent years seemed in any case to make such a chapter a good idea, and Nietzsche's On The Genealogy of Morals is a good text to add to the list of those which my chapters are intended to accompany. A much-abbreviated version of my discussion of Marx and Freud is now incorporated into the Nietzsche chapter.
Chapter 11 of the first edition dealt briefly with some themes in twentieth-century ethics. That material is considerably expanded in the new Chapters 10 to 12. Those chapters still make no claim to provide anything like a comprehensive survey of twentieth-century work in moral philosophy, but they may, at any rate, help the reader to identify some main tendencies in a large and complex body of work, and indicate ways in which themes from the classic tradition have been continued by contemporary writers.
In revising the book I have again benefited greatly from other people's advice. I should like to thank Eve Garrard, David McNaughton, Hugh LaFollette, James Rachels, Karen Jones, and Sean Sayers for their very helpful comments on the text, and Tim Barton of Oxford University Press for suggesting that I prepare a new edition, and for his valuable guidance at all stages of the process.
