Introduction: What Is a Yuga?

Yuga is a Sanskrit word which means an epoch, long eras, or eons of time.

In India, and particularly in the teachings of yoga, time is described as moving through cycles, rather than in a linear fashion. The yuga theory explains that there have been in the past, and will be in the future, both higher and lower

ages, manifesting in cyclic patterns.

Just as our planets seasons move through summer, autumn, winter, and spring, each yuga involves stages of gradual change, through which the earth and the consciousness of human beings, as a whole, progress or regress.

Toward the end of the 19th century, a man with exceptional credentials as a scholar wrote a book called The Holy Science.

Swami Sri Yukteswar (18551936), of Serampore, Bengal, was a master of great wisdom, deeply learned in the ancient lore of India. In his book he stated that, according to a system i

of chronology that was established by astronomers in ancient times, our planet moves through great cycles of time called yugas.

The Holy Science appeared in 1894. In it Sri Yukteswar described this ancient chronology in detail, and corrected certain misinterpretations of that chronology that had crept in over recent centuries.

Long ago in India and in other very old civilizations, different names were given for four ages. The Egyptians called them the ages of gods, demi-gods, heroes, and men. The Greeks named them the golden, silver, bronze, and iron ages.

The ages described in the yuga theory are four: Satya Yuga, the spiritual age; Treta Yuga, the mental age; Dwapara Yuga, the energy age; and Kali Yuga, the dark or materially oriented age. Kali Yuga was said to be an age of spiritual ignorance.

Sri Yukteswar announced that the world had actually left the lowest age of Kali Yuga recently and entered the next and higher age of Dwapara Yuga . And he was able to give these teachings modern, scientific support.

According to Sri Yukteswar, a full yuga cycle takes 24,000

years to complete, and includes two divisions: 12,000 years of ascending consciousness and 12,000 years of descending consciousness.

Looking at this system scientifically, from an astronomers point of view, the first division of the cycle of the yugas represents a progression from the time when our solar system is the farthest from the center of our galaxy to the time when it is closest to that center.
