introduction
A re you a little frightened? asked the gray-haired woman seated next to me on the plane.
I looked over, startled. How had she known?
I hate turbulence. After one bump, my hands clench and my stomach knots. I didnt think Id let on, however, at least not obviously. Rather, Id pretended to read.
Dont worry, dear, she said, patting my hand and ignoring my astonishment. We grandmother types are always on call.
My seat mate had delivered a dose of empathy, the ability to sense what is occurring in those outside of ourselves. Specifically, shed dispensed emotional empathy, one of the four types of empathy youll learn about in this book. The other three styles are physical, mental, and spiritual.
In a nutshell, these four capabilities can be defined in the following ways:
physical empathy: The ability to sense what is occurring in anothers body, including relating to illnesses, aches and pains, and all other types of unpleasant and pleasant sensations.
emotional empathy: The capacity to feel others feelings as though they are our own.
mental empathy: An aptitude for cluing into anothers thoughts and perceptions, as well as plugging into the universal mind, a gigantic mesh of knowledge.
