Praise for Can You Turn the Lights Off?
Can You Turn The Lights Off? is exactly what you need it to be. Whether you are a parent seeking to change generational cycles, a young adult figuring out who they are, or someone hoping to just be seen, Emily Aub gracefully offers the gift that so few people in this world do; validation so warm that you can feel a hug through paper. Chapter after chapter, Emily shares her life so authentically that you feel like youre sitting on FaceTime with a friend. Her story answers and guides you through the many questions we all have as youths: childhood trauma, identities, relationships, social pressures and more. Can You Turn The Lights Off? was the gift that gave me the epiphanies I needed to make life changing decisions to reach my best self.
Uzma Khokhar
This book unequivocally changed my life. It healed me in ways tens of thousands of dollars of therapy and different healing had not. Reading Can You Turn The Lights Off? was a medicine journey that held up a safe and clear mirror, that allowed me to see and validate my own pain, my own experiences and myself in a way that completely blew me away. This book is a masterpiece. It is mind- blowing how true to the category of memoir Emily stays, because it is more powerful than any self-help or healing book I have ever read. Its part book, part portal of healing. Somehow, without ever telling the reader what to think, do or feel, Emily has shared her story in such deeply intimate and digested ways, it takes the reader further into themselves than they could go alone. She put experiences into words I didnt even know I was missing until I read them. I honestly feel like I cant find the words to accurately share how much this book changed me. Healed me. Gave me a safer and softer place to exist in the world. But it did. And the trajectory of my life is different because of it. And I think it will do the same for you, too.

To know Emily is to love her, but to read her work, is to be continuously inspired by her compassion and courage, in ways that surprise you long after your eyes leave the page. Can You Turn The Lights Off? moved me in many ways. The book reads as though Emily has graciously opened the door to her private country house, bouncing through the halls, while regaling her life with a warmth and familiarity, that welcomes you like a childhood friend. There are moments so painful and honest that they make you question how she could be so naturally open and unguarded in her writing, and then other chapters, that have you laughing and celebrating, wildly rooting for her every rise.
I could not have anticipated how I would grow alongside Emily, as she guided the reader through her evolution and inner revolution. I expected to relate to Emily in obvious ways: as a friend, and a woman, and a fellow childhood trauma survivor - but I felt myself witnessing her journey through the eyes of my own inner child, and then most profoundly, as a mother. Through her book, I found healing into parts of me that had gone unseen, while simultaneously, witnessing my daughter with a renewed perspective.
It is so rare to find an author that so accurately and authentically shares their experience. And although, writing is never simple, Emily shares in a way that feels fluid; as though, the peace she has infused into the most painful parts of herself, generously flow into, and soothe, you as well. It is through this transmission that you find yourself doing the work alongside her. Youre not far into the book before you realize that this was her plan all along; to not only show you her healing, but to walk with you, to your own. Emily is a most gracious hostess, who has planned your stay to the last detail. While venturing through the darkest parts of herself, she will also be lighting up rooms in your own heart. You soon realize that her voyage of acceptance, brings you home too.
Her relatability is a gift, that so few can pull off, with such delight. Can You Turn The Lights Off? is imbued with the most rare kind of courage necessary to share this honestly and unabashedly about ones own experience. There is not a human who will not be gifted by adventuring through these pages.

Can You Turn The Lights Off? is simply a masterpiece. Its real, raw and vulnerable while also revealing softness, cleverness and humour. While reading, its guaranteed that youll laugh, cry but most importantly itll make you think and feel. If youve ever felt like you just dont quite fit in, no matter how hard you try, youll relate to the struggles and the triumphs that Emily faces. Honestly, youll fall in love with her and her story as you get to witness her deep ability for love, compassion and strength.

The greatest book I ever read. One of the most validating books as a woman who had a fake it till you make it plan that didnt work out. This book helped me process some of the internalized hurt that I held due to trying to fit into societal norms and made me realize there is no shame in being who you are. Emily shares her stories in such an authentic way that makes you feel like youre there, experiencing her journey yourself. This book has provided me with a better understanding of the raw realities of navigating Western society as a queer autistic woman and recognize the love and beauty that comes with embracing your truth and diversities. This book gave me back a piece of myself that I didnt know was missing.
Kelsey Leblanc
In Emilys second book she takes her personal life experiences and turns them into universal life lessons. She writes about her experiences with trauma, growing up with undiagnosed autism and coming out as a gay woman with such radical honesty and poignancy. Emily truly has a gift for getting right into the heart of things; she does not beat around the bush with any of the stories she tells. This book will surely open your mind, widen your heart, and give you the gift of seeing things differently.

I laughed, I cried and lived a thousand lives reading this work of art. Being familiar with Emilys work, I knew it would be a worthy read to say the least. However, I can earnestly say that having read this memoir has been unlike any reading experience before. Every chapter had its own character, its own beauty, its own rollercoaster ride and they all end with a banger. Emily uses words in a way that engages all senses. When I look back to each chapter, its like looking back on movie scenes or experiences I have witnessed first- hand. To me this book is about the journey of becoming oneself, living an authentic joyful life the way we simply are and not how we think we should be. Emily is so distinctively herself that the term Emily has become a vibe for me. I now say, Oh thats so Emily! when something is authentic. In this book, Ive had the great joy of reading the story of how Emily grew into the grand woman I know her to be. What an inspiration. And this book its so Emily.
