Part I My Fate with GMOs

Historically, coal miners would send a canary down a shaft of a cave to determine if the mine was safe or not. If there was too much noxious gas and a lack of oxygen, the canary would die and not return. If the air was good , the canary would eventually fly out of the mine and indicate it was safe for the miners to go in and work. I suppose we have normalized inducing harm to other living creatures as a part of doing business. Much like the canaries in the coal mines, we all are subject to the harm caused by GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) , which have been mainstreamed into our markets without proper disclosure or consent.

I happen to be one that suffered ill effects from this genetic change in the DNA, the foundation of life, from the onset. There were no general human population studies to determine whether GMOs were safe to consume prior to their release to the market. And still, none exist to the date of this publication. When I eventually discovered the source of my ill health and could escape to a GMO-free area, my health returned rather quickly. When I was exposed to GMOs my health deteriorated also relatively quickly.

Unfortunately, my attempts to share this warning have fallen on deaf ears in the food industry, public policy and agriculture academia. The following expos details my experiences and research on GMOs to help other GMO canaries find their way back to health before it is too late. I do wonder if we are all canaries, some having varying expressions and degrees of health compromise. I can only hope that a greater understanding of GMOs from another perspective will start to turn the health of our world in a better direction before any more are unable to escape a more tragic fate.

I believe the development of transgenic modifications in the twentieth century will go down in history as humanities most atrocious mistake on an industrial level. Looking back, my fate with GMOs seemed inevitable. I have come to believe my entire life was set up to be one of the GMO canaries and to speak out against the unaddressed, ignored and even blocked disclosures regarding the impact of GMOs on human health.

I was born in the United States, in the so called land of the free and lived there until I could no longer reside in the rapidly escalating fabrication and consequential degradation of nature. My true nature is to be inquisitive and holistic, coupled with an incorrigible spirit to serve and be my greatest potential through love-based humanitarian ideals and spiritual growth. I am all for individual freedoms along with mutual respect. When some freedoms infringe on the free- will and well-being of others I set aside my kindheartedness and confront the issues directly. I readily trade kind virtues to hold the line against many forms of oppression and fight against the infliction of harm once it enters my scope of awareness.

Still, I continue to work at giving those who work for GMO producers the benefit of doubt in perhaps not knowing their products are creating harm. That affordance ends with this publication. Legislative activities and political actions would encourage an assumption that at some point those in power and their subordinates know their products are not as legitimate as we all would like to believe. If I did not have the experiences over the past two decades, plus, since GMOs flooded the consumer market, I would have most likely continued to be in the dark and may even believe their altruistic propaganda. I simply cannot do that any longer. None of us really can.

I have been negatively impacted by GMOs for a long time, perhaps my entire life. When my health took a turn for the worst, when GM Os took over the grocery market , it took me a decade to figure out that GMOs were causing my persistent ill health. As a health care practitioner, researcher and holistic health coach, I began to investigate the source of how GMOs could have taken over our world in order to understand the approaches necessary to steer us back to a safe and healthy course. In my opinion, which is largely based on my experiences in health care leadership and problem solving, nothing is too complicated or too embedded to undo. From my work in holistic health, I expect it will take more than logic and research to remedy this situation.

GMOs and the associated toxic chemicals initially became covertly entrenched in our food and pharmaceutical industries and have since leached into our air and water. There is a great need for a sharing and understanding the less altruistic side of GMOs and their consequences. Key contributors to the GMO takeover include the deregulation of corporations in the eighties 1 and advancement of corporate power by giving them a voice in and the ability to fund politics through Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission in 20102 . These policies set the stage for taking America down a destructive path through government regulations. Some federal government officials and agencies have become less focused on serving the people and more focused blocking us from fighting the now dominant power of the corporations. Some might argue that it has always been this way. I disagree. At least we have not seen the blatant takeover and subsequent harm to human s and the ecology to this degree.

The advancement of industrialized technologies sets us up for greater disaster with each misstep we make when leaders disregard any sense of ethics or concern for humankind and the environment. As citizens, we must pay attention to what is going on in our government and corporations to preserve the natural beauty of our humanity. Since the power of the government has been transferred to corporations, both industrialized agriculture and industrialized health care have synergistically spun out of control. That may seem obvious to those who pay high insurance premiums, despite or perhaps because of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 3 and the coinciding cheap and subsidized products we have come to call food. The two are more linked than I ever anticipated. Democracy will only work if its citizens get involved and keep a healthy balance in market activity. We lost what influence we had and it is time to get it back.
