The events contained in this book are true. Reconstructed from memory, past notes, research, an interview with Scott Strauss, and the help of my wife, Allison, this is my account of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and my subsequent recovery. The dialogue is not verbatim, but it is intended to capture as much as possible the accuracy and spirit of what was said at the time. Others may remember things differently; I can only speak from my experience. Many names are mentioned in this book to show respect, honor, and appreciation. However, the absence of names in no way reflects the contrary. There are so many people, named and unnamed; each is a thread in the tapestry of this story and my life.

Reading this book may be therapeutic, evoke emotional distress, or both. Although it may have a therapeutic effect, it is not intended as a substitute for therapy. If it evokes emotional distress, please reach out to a local behavioral health provider or emergency room (if needed) to assist in processing this experience rather than struggling alone. Our hope is that we can share, grieve, and grow together in our individual and collective traumas.
Note: Explicit language, intense situations, and descriptions of death and dying are included. Please use discretion with age appropriateness.
To my wife Allison for being my soulmate and a pillar of strength and unconditional love. To my beautiful Bianca and Olivia, you are both the very best gift I could have ever been blessed with, and you both make me so proud to be your father. You are my legacy.

To my fellow first responders, who are willing to bleed physically and emotionally for the sake of answering the call to serve. I know what you give so that others can remain safe in their shielded view of pain and danger. I dedicate this book to you as my way to reach back to you. Your courage and sacrifice come at a cost; please do not carry that cost alone.

I would like to acknowledge my wife, Annie, for her tireless support of me, my writing, and my passion in caring for others. To University Professors Press (https://universityprofessorspress.com), thank you for breaking with your traditional path of publishing predominantly academic publications and partnering with us in a shared desire to reach out to those that may not otherwise reach out for themselves. All our intertwined lives depend on one another. Thank you to Rodger Broom, a fellow clinician, retired police officer, and fireman, for being a reader of this work and offering additional perspective. To Allison Jimeno, thank you for lending an extra set of eyes and editorial assistance. You definitely did more work than what you signed on to do. You are very much appreciated!
Will
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank some incredibly important people in my life. I mention them throughout the book, but I cannot mention them enough to express the amount of gratitude I have for them.
To my beautiful wife and soulmate, Allison, without your love, support, and patience, I could have never found my sunrise. Allison, I owe you so much, and I try every single day to give back to you as you have given to me with your love and support. Te Amo!
To Bianca and Olivia, thank you for being my reasons for fighting so hard to battle my darkness. You have both grown into beautiful young women who make your mother and me so proud, and you truly are my legacy. I love you both beyond what words can express. War Eagle!
To my parents, William and Emma (aka Papito and Gizmo), thank you so much for bringing me to the United States of America and instilling in me the desire to be a good person and a proud American, while also never letting me forget our Colombian heritage, which has made me a better person. I have been able to give back to our precious United States of America through my service and my multicultural background, and for that I am forever grateful to both of you. I love you with all my heart.
To Karen, my baby sister; her wonderful husband, Doug; and my nephew, Gavin, thank you so much for always being so supportive of me and our family without question. You are a huge part of my life, and I am grateful to have you all in my life. Karen, I love you, and Im blessed to have you as my sister.
