Cover:A Shinto deity from a shrine in the Izumo region of Japan made of hinoki wood and dating from the 12th century. This deity is Priest Hoshi (Ch. P'ao-chih, 425-514 A.D.), an early Chinese Buddhist priest, a favorite of artists because he was a person of many visages, constantly altering his face by tearing it apart with his hands. It is a gift of Robert Allerton in the permanent collection of the Honolulu Academy of Arts and is printed with their permission.
