Long ago I had a Granny and a Grandma. They were both white-haired gentle women.

Granny, the Scottish one, liked to read Westerns as she rocked in her chair and sucked on a toffee. Grandma once ran a stall at Newbiggin beach in the North-East, and chaired meetings using an olivewood gavel.

Id like to tell you more, but I know hardly anything else about them. I will never know what songs they sang as they washed up, which flowers they loved, or what views they held.

When they died, effectively, for me, they disappeared without trace. There were old photographs but in this context they are hardly worth a thousand words.

If only they had left a written account of their lives

I believe that one of the greatest gifts we can give to our families, and bequeath to those who follow us, is an intimate, first-hand account of our lives.

This book will make the task of capturing you and your life enjoyable for you, and enriching for those who read it. Mike Oke feels passionately that everyone has within them a marvellous story the tale of their life. Hes just the man to help you tell it.

My initial thanks, as always, go to those without whom this book would not have been possible: the scores of people friends I have had the privilege of assisting with their own precious life stories over the past 19 years. My thanks go to them, especially those who have directly contributed to this book.

Special thanks are due to my wonderful wife Mychelle, my constant support and friend, for putting up with all my hare-brained ideas, usually in the small hours of the morning, and for believing so wholeheartedly in me. Katie and Matthew are the shining lights in our life they can never know how much they are loved.

The team at Bound Biographies are due my thanks for believing in our work and for putting up with me. Tony warrants a particular mention for all his help, not least with this book.

Dedication

To Mum, a very special lady, greatly missed by her angels and saints.

This book bears little resemblance to the first edition of Write Your Life Story published in 2001. So much has changed in nine short years perhaps emphasising just how much happens in a life of ten times that duration.

Since Who Do You Think You Are? came to our screens in 2004, the world of genealogy has not been the same. The twin phenomenon of the Paxman effect and access to online census returns has led to an insatiable appetite for family history. Who would have thought that so genteel a hobby could have brought tears to the eyes of a man who eats politicians for breakfast! The nation was gripped and has been ever since.

This new edition of Write Your Life Story offers even more tips for the enthusiastic hobbyist looking to record some of the incredible years witnessed within living memory and special people and events encountered along the way. Whilst the final record will be a treasure trove for loved-ones, it is the intention of this book to make the writing journey equally rewarding.

It is hoped that this book, along with the companion volume, Times of Our Lives, which follows a typical life of someone born in Britain during the 1930s, 40s or 50s, is the definitive aid for those considering writing their life story.

Give it a go. Youll be glad you did and so will those fortunate enough to read it.

Knowing why you want to write your life story will influence what is included - photo 2

Knowing why you want to write your life story will influence what is included. This chapter will look at reasons for writing , as well as, hopefully, providing inspiration for those not yet convinced of the validity of such a project.

Knowing why you want to write

There are many reasons to write and it is likely that at least one of the following will strike a chord.

Nursing a desire to write

Maybe you have never had the time, or possibly the confidence , to start writing until now. Alternatively, you may have kept a diary all your life and now want it collated and edited into a book. This is your opportunity.

Case study Dorothys ambition realised

Dorothy had always harboured a desire to write. As a child she was forever sending snippets to the Yorkshire Evening Post for inclusion in Uncle Macs column some even being accepted. Sadly, her mother did not share Dorothys enthusiasm, and whenever she caught her with a pencil in her hand, would tell her to Do something useful go and help Dad in the garden.

Looking after a husband and four active children meant that, in her middle years, Dorothy never had the time to write, but after John died she took the opportunity to sit down and write a tribute to him. Initially she recalled the special times they had together, but then she started to write about her childhood and of the years bringing up her own children. It was a proud day when Dorothys lifelong ambition of writing a book was realised The Gospel According to Johns Wife.

Remembering parents or grandparents

How many times do we look at boxes of old photographs and wish we knew something about the faces before us? There may not even be any names on the back to identify the people.

As time passes so there are fewer people who have memories of those from a previous generation. You might be the only person who still remembers your grandparents. If you do not record what you know of their lives these precious details will be lost forever.

Interestingly, as you write about your parents and grandparents , you may well spot patterns which you and perhaps your children have repeated.

Responding to a request to write

This might be by a family member, perhaps a child, grandchild , nephew or niece, or maybe a friend has been nagging at you to put pen to paper.

It is now part of the National Curriculum to seek eyewitness accounts, so perhaps a neighbours child has sown the seed for this autobiographical adventure.
