Where do dreams come from and what do they mean?

There is much discussion today about where dreams come from and what they mean. The Bible teaches that dreams are spiritual messages from God. Because theyre spiritual in nature, they are (usually) symbolic. The meaning of a dream can be understood once its symbolic elements are decoded. Dreams reveal our future, our talents, our assignments and our divine destiny.

With the same down-to-earth teaching style used in Hearing Gods Voice Made Simple and Seeing in the Spirit Made Simple, Praying Medic provides Bible-based teaching on the nature of dreams and their meaning. The most common dreams types and themes are examined. Dozens of dreams are provided and their meanings are explained. Youll learn to distinguish between literal and symbolic dreams, youll discover how to have more dreams and how to deal with nightmares. A glossary of over 700 dream symbols is included as well as a list of more than 400 names and their meanings. If you want to know what God is saying through your dreams, this book is for you!

Any vehicle powered by your own strength like a bicycle or canoe may - photo 1

Any vehicle powered by your own strength, like a bicycle or canoe, may symbolize working in our own power as opposed to the power of Gods Spirit. Vehicles with powerful engines symbolize great spiritual power.

Sometimes a vehicle is a particular color because it represents the actual vehicle we own (or did own at one time). In these cases, no significance is attached to the color of the vehicle. In other cases, where the vehicle is not one you own, the color may represent some aspect of your life. (See the symbols dictionary for the meaning of specific colors.)

What if youre driving a car down a steep grade in a dream without the ability to stop? An out-of-control car represents an out-of-control life. A dream that youre driving a car that continually swerves into oncoming traffic also represents a lack of self-control. These dreams are warnings to exercise restraint and self-control. Self-control is a fruit of our relationship with God (see Gal 5:22).

Lets consider the following dream: The dreamer is driving the car they currently own. One front tire is flat, but they keep going. Its difficult to see; its night and the cars headlights are dim. Although the dreamer has no plan to turn left or right, the turn signal is on, and the dreamer is unable to turn it off. A police car pulls them over as the dream ends. Now, lets interpret the dream.

A cars tires allow it to move smoothly. A flat tire hinders progress; therefore, something is preventing the dreamer from reaching their spiritual destination. Headlights enable us to see what is in front of us. Dim headlights can represent poor spiritual foresight. The dreamer may be blindsided by some event they should have seen coming. Turn signals indicate a change of direction. The cars turn signal was on, but the dreamer was not changing direction, and they were unable to cancel the turn indicator. This suggests that the dreamer may be reluctant to accept needed changes or realize changes are needed. Police represent spiritual authority or leadership. Being pulled over by police in a dream usually symbolizes a need for correction from someone who can provide wise counsel.

You may have a dream where youre driving a car while looking into the rear-view mirror. A rear-view mirror shows what is behind us. Gazing at one symbolizes looking into our past. While theres nothing wrong with reflecting on our past, if we obsess over mistakes, especially if we condemn ourselves, it can be unhealthy. Emotional healing can help in dealing with unresolved issues from our past; this could be the message of such a dream.

A friend had a dream years ago where he was piloting a large passenger ship. Passenger vehicles often represent church congregations. My friend is a mature prophetic leader. God was showing him that he would soon lead a larger group.

About ten years ago, I had a dream where I was co-piloting a spaceship. I worked beside a more experienced pilot. We went on several missions, including one where we encountered another space ship piloted by someone who wasnt qualified to fly solo. We did what we could to get them to land safely, though the other pilot caused problems by being careless in how he flew. When we landed, my pilot reported him to the authorities. Spaceships operate in deep space. Flying one in a dream suggests a ministry that operates in the deeper mysteries of God. My position as co-pilot indicated I was in spiritual training when I had the dream. In this kind of ministry, dangers exist, and operating safely is of prime importance.

When we operate a vehicle in a dream, it tends to portray aspects of our personal ministry to others, even if that ministry is to a handful of people. The age of a vehicle may illustrate a period of time when certain types of ministries were popular. At various times during the last two centuries, healing and revival ministries were prominent. Driving a car built during that era may suggest a ministry that was popular at the time. I once had a dream where I was building a car from the chassis of two different models. The front half was a model from the 1930s. The back half was a model from the 1940s. The dream spoke of needing to connect two cultural movements that were popular at different time periods.

In 2013, I had a dream with two scenes. In the first part of the dream, I spoke with someone as we looked at the engine of a car. (I did not know the person I spoke with.) I viewed the engine from above and below. The engine was unusual in that it had flexible metal intake and exhaust manifolds. (Most cars have manifolds made of cast iron or aluminum). I noted that the engine had an in-line eight-cylinder configuration and later learned it was a rare and powerful model. In the second scene of the dream, I watched a man carefully work his way through the steps necessary to make a strategic move that would bring financial prosperity, which he would use to further Gods kingdom.

Engines speak of power. Spiritual power is used for healing and miracles. It seems that God had planned to give someone a unique healing ministry through which they could fund advancement of His kingdom.

I one had a related dream where I rebuilt an engine. As I assembled the parts, I thought of how I might decrease wear on the parts so they wouldnt need to be repaired as often. I was inspired to use a different type of oil that wouldnt break down. It would protect the parts from friction and wear and the engine would last longer. The Holy Spirit is frequently represented by oil. As we interact with others, we create friction, which can lead to interpersonal problems. The grace of God motivates us to forgive others. Like oil, it prevents friction and keeps our relationships intact.

Your House
Just as vehicles represent features of our lives, houses represent aspects of our life that God wants to address. When a specific room in a house is the scene of a dream, it can illustrate matters that pertain to a particular part of life. As noted previously, bathrooms, when they are the focal point of a dream, reveal parts of our life that need cleansing. Bedrooms are where we rest. A bedroom dream may speak of a need for spiritual rest, but more often, bedrooms are the backdrop of dreams where God addresses matters of intimacy with Him. The Bible book Song of Songs is a romantic and highly figurative portrayal of mans relationship with God.

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth
For your love is better than wine.
Because of the fragrance of your good ointments,
Your name is ointment poured forth;
Therefore the virgins love you.
Draw me away!
We will run after you.
The king has brought me into his chambers.
We will be glad and rejoice in you.
We will remember your love more than wine.
Rightly do they love you.

Song 1:1-4

If a person appears in a bedroom dream and makes romantic overtures toward you, they might be a stand-in for God. If your relationship with Him is distant, expect Him to draw you closer through these dreams. When we draw close to God, He discusses personal matters, like our honesty, integrity, faithfulness, charity, obedience, compassion, or perseverance. Ive found that when He corrects me in some area, He does it in the kindest way, and Hes quick to praise me when I make needed changes.

Anything God uses can become a tool of an enemy. Bedroom dreams with explicit sex scenes can come from evil spirits and draw us into sexual immorality. Dreams with dark colors, dim lighting, and negative emotions are signs of the enemys handiwork. If you resist sexual immorality, evil spirits will find someone else to harass, and these dreams will be less common.

When we arent using our car, we keep it in a garage. If you have a dream where youre sitting in the car you currently own, but the car is idling in your garage, it may suggest that youve been less active than you should be. The dream might be an encouragement to get back in the game. Conversely, after a long stretch of activity, you might have a dream where youre driving for a long time. At the end of the dream, you pull your car into your garage. This dream might hint that rest is needed.
