Devotional Thought on Aging
I like the question once asked by Satchel Paige, that venerable alumnus of baseball: How old would you be if you didnt know how old you were? An honest answer to that question depends on an honest admission of ones attitude. It has nothing to do with ones age.
The longer I live, the more I become convinced that our major battle in life is not with age but with maturity. All of us are involuntary victims of the former. There is no choice involved in growing older. Our challenge is the choice of whether or not to grow up. God is for us. Gods goal is that we move toward maturity, all our past failures and faults and hang-ups notwithstanding.
Let me leave you three bones to chew on:
1. Look within... and release. What is it down inside you that is stunting your growth? When you find something you are hanging onto too tightly, deliberately let go.
2. Look around... and respond. Is there some need you can help meet? Risk responding.
3. Look up... and rejoice. You are the recipient of His riches! Stay involved! You will never regret it. And the more involved you remain, the less concern you will have for how old you are.
By the way, how old would you be if you didnt know how old you were?
~ CHARLES R. SWINDOLL
Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
R OMANS 15:4
The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
H EBREWS 4:12
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.
1 P ETER 2:2

I meditate on it all day long.

My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
C OLOSSIANS 2:23
Your statutes are my heritage forever;
they are the joy of my heart.
P SALM 119:111
This is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.
P HILIPPIANS 1:910
I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your statutes.
I have more understanding than the elders,
for I obey your precepts.
I have kept my feet from every evil path
so that I might obey your word.
I have not departed from your laws,
for you yourself have taught me.
How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
I gain understanding from your precepts;
therefore I hate every wrong path.
Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path.
P SALM 119:99105
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs.
E PHESIANS 4:29
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
J OSHUA 1:8

giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the L ORD are radiant,
giving light to the eyes.
