Part 2
Weve covered a lot of ground in this book so far, from understanding Gods plan for us to speak his truth to one another, to exploring how Gods grace informs how we speak with grace, to reminding ourselves of Scriptures power to transform lives. Now we come to this crucial question: Where exactly can I turn in the Bible and what biblical truth can I give to someone who needs godly encouragement or counsel? The rest of this book answers that question.
In the following chapters you will find Scripture passages you can share with those who are worried (chapter 7), weary (chapter 8), wayward (chapter 9), or weeping (chapter 10). Each chapter contains three or four Scripture passages with short explanations of key truths that you can easily communicate to others in their time of need. Weve crafted the explanations to read as if youre addressing your loved one directly. Following are some practical suggestions for using these scriptures in your own conversations.
1. Mark the Scripture passages in your Bible and make a cheat sheet. Underline or highlight the key passages in your Bible. Then make a separate cheat sheet listing common struggles (such as worried, weary, weeping, and wayward) with their corresponding Bible verse references and key ideas so you can quickly remind yourself where to turn in the Scriptures and what biblical truths to share. Write your cheat sheet on the front or back blank pages of your Bible or keep it on your phone along with a Bible app for quick reference. We also recommend that you regularly add relevant verses to this list as you read your Bible and listen to sermons.
2. Memorize key verses (or at least their references) . Theres nothing like good old-fashioned memorization. One of the best ways to memorize these passages is to spend time studying and meditating on them for your own spiritual edification. Own these Scripture passages personally, and youll be better prepared to share them and the truths they contain straight from your heart.
3. Ask something like this: May I share with you what the Lord has taught me from the Bible that might help you too? Be careful to discern and respect another persons receptivity to hearing Scripture. You cant force your friend to receive the word of God, but the Holy Spirit can prompt her to listen in his perfect timing. If she says no, trust the Lord for a future opportunity. If she says yes, share one Scripture passage you believe would be helpful and meaningful in her situation.
4. Ask your friend to read the Bible passage . When possible, have her read the Scripture verses aloud. Its important for others to verbalize, hear, and process the word of God for themselves. Stopping your conversation for a few minutes to let someone carefully read aloud and consider Gods word can make a significant impact on a troubled soul.
5. If you find it helpful, read the explanations of various Scripture passages directly from this book . You dont have to look like a know-it-all! And you dont have to be a memory master! Personally, we often refer to and use other biblical resources to give us confidence and direction in our conversations with others. This also helps us to remember key truths that we may otherwise forget.
