God... has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.

2 Timothy 1:89

Introduction

W hat is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word calling ? Does it elicit thoughts of becoming an evangelist or a missionary in some remote and difficult place? How would you answer if people asked about your calling?

Multitudes of Christians fail to realize they even have a calling. Subsequently, very few discover and pursue their own personal calling. This unfolding of purpose and destiny is what Derek Prince teaches through this book in his uniquely clear, accessible, biblical way.

At a strategic moment in Dereks life, the Lord asked him a probing question: Are you satisfied, or do you want to go further? After taking time to consider the question, Derek replied, I am not satisfied.

In recounting the story, Derek went on to say:

When I said, Im not satisfied, I realized for the first time how dissatisfied I really was. So often in the religious life, we try to keep up pretenses. We try to act as though everything was the way it ought to be and ask, What else could there be?

And yet somewhere deep inside us we know that we are not achieving our full potential. We know that there is so much more that God has for us, and there is so much more that is in the Scripture, and yet we are not achieving it. And yet we dont want to face that fact. We just want to say to ourselves, Well, this is the way its always been. This is the way it has to be, what more could there be? This is how people do it. This is how churches are run. This is how Christians live.

God has to bring us to the moment of truth before He can help us. And when God faced me with that question Are you satisfied? and put me under an obligation to answer, and when I said to God, Im not satisfied, I came to that moment of truth. I saw that there were many things in my life that were not really the way I could have wished them to be. I saw that there were many unfulfilled longings. I saw that there were areas of potential in me that were not being developed.

And I saw it all in an instant, by an inner revelation, but it didnt come until I faced up to Gods question and gave Him an honest answer.

That is where the Holy Spirit does His wonderful worktugging our hearts, pushing us forward, inviting, yes, even daring us to give everything to receive that which cannot be bought. As you accept His invitation and yield to Gods Word and the Holy Spirit, the Lord will use you to establish His Kingdom and bring glory to His name in ways you never dreamed of.

As Derek Prince writes, The point at which God confronts you with His call is the most significant moment in your life. Your whole destiny for time and eternity will be determined by the way you respond. So, lets return to that probing question: Are you satisfied, or do you want to go further?

The Upward Call

Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then He said to them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. They immediately left their nets and followed Him. Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James... and John... in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Matthew 4:1822

I find it interesting that the first four men Jesus called were fishermen. In some measure, I think I understand the wisdom of God in His choice. Fishermen are a breed apart. If you are reading this and you are a fisherman, you know that fishermen are fanatics.

Sometimes when I have gone for a walk, I have passed by men who are fishing. I notice that the fish are not biting. But then I think, That doesnt matter theyre fishermen. Circumstances never bother them. Discouragement never affects them. Adverse weather is not a problem for them. They have a vision for fish.

The Lord gave us a wonderful message when He began His ministry with fishermen: Christians should be like that. We should be so passionate about answering His call that nothing else matters.

Notice, too, that Jesus did not waste a lot of words in calling His disciples: Follow Me. This may be the shortest sermon on record! As we will discover, He did not and does not do a great deal of explaining. This shows us that there is no compromise in this commitment to Jesus. There is no middle ground.
