An in-depth presentation of one of the most profound traditions of Tibetan Buddhismthe Dudjom lineagebeginning with the Buddha and tracing the origins and development of the lineage through its Indian and Tibetan masters. The Ruby Rosary is Thinley Norbus commentary on a short prayer written by his father, His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, who was a revered leader of the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism as well as a revealer of treasures in the Tibetan tradition. The root text, entitled The Pearl Necklace, is a prayer of devotion to the eighteen primary masters of the Dudjom incarnation lineage, strung together into a necklace of liberated lifetimes. With lively storytelling, Thinley Norbu illuminates the life of each of these great yogis, scholars, and masters of the Buddhas teachings, from Nden Dorje Chang, Shariputra, and Saraha to Dudjom Lingpa. It concludes with an account of the enlightened activities of Dudjom Rinpoche himself, a towering figure, thus completing this awe-inspiring portrait of a modern master.

The first volume of Kyabje Thinley Norbu Rinpoches Collected Works is comprised of commentaries on writings by the Great Treasure Revealer Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje, including a supplication prayer to the successive lifetimes of Dudjom Rinpoche, entitled The Pearl Necklace, as well as a Calling the Lama from Afar prayer. The American woman Sangye Pal Lha [Heidi Nevin] has translated this volume into English, which is wonderful. Our world has many different ethnicities and languages, yet we all share the common wish for happiness. By relying upon the sublime life stories of this holy master, which are free from exaggeration and understatement, and upon his sacred writings, we will be able to follow his example and train in the precious Buddha Dharma, which is the source of every happiness and benefit. For this and many other reasons, I feel that this translation will be of value, so I rejoice with full heart.

This was written by Sangye Pema Shepa, the one bearing the title Dudjom Incarnation, on kin Day in the eighth month of the Tibetan Earth Dog year [October 4, 2018].

The commentary on the Calling the Lama from Afar prayer was not translated for this volume.

Geuter Tragtung Dudjom Lingpa, the banner of whose renown flies high above the three planes of existence, effortlessly opened the hundred gateways to profound hidden treasures, including the body of teachings on the inconceivable secret of the three yogas of the Early Translation (Nyingma) school. His immediate reincarnation was the king of scholars, Dudjom Tulku Jigdral Yeshe Dorje, who freely expounded the stras, tantras, and sciences, unaided by others. He was the sovereign of the Nyingma teachings and a mighty siddha of the Luminous Great Perfection and the level of great-bliss unity, which is achieved through the swift-messenger path of Secret Mantra. Dudjom Rinpoches sublime natural and heart-son was the great tantric Vidydhara Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche. He was learned in Stra, Mantra, and the conventional sciences, and through the swift path of profound, secret instructions, he held the throne of mighty yogins who have realized the dissolution of delusion. Thinley Norbus compositions are eloquent, profound, easy to understand, and concise, and they draw forth the key points in clear progression. He elucidates the major topics of texts through the stainless path of scripture and reasoning, creating treatises that both heal [the ills of the three poisons] and protect [from the sufferings of cyclic existence and the lower realms]. His lucid writings, which captivate the mind the moment they are heard, were written exclusively to benefit his followers. Therefore, the effort to publish and distribute them widely is an excellent one, and as I see it, such actions can only bring benefit to the Dharma and beings. In this case as well, I join my palms before my heart and with deep sincerity, I scatter a rain of joyful flowers to celebrate the fine people who have worked to publish and distribute Thinley Norbus Collected Works [which includes the present commentary]. I pray that your efforts may be swiftly and excellently accomplished.

L AMA T HARCHIN R INPOCHE

Sovereign of the hundred Buddha families, glorious holy Guru, at your feet I bow!

Here I shall offer a brief biography of the supreme sovereign master Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje, entitled Treasury of Gems of the Threefold Faith.

O SVASTI !

From the spacious expanse of the sky, free of constructs, the primordially pure inner lucidity of the youthful vase body,

The spontaneously accomplished outer lucidity amasses as dense clouds of unobstructed dynamic energy,

From which the sweet, nourishing rain of compassion pours down, enriching the vital essence of the definitive secret Dharma and beings.

May the sovereign master Dudjom Drodul Lingpa be victorious over existence and quiescence!

The limits of the sky of your three secrets enlightened qualities

Are impossible to measurehow dare I attempt to describe them?

However, please grant your permission
