A generation of students and pastors will treasure this highly useful and - photo 1

A generation of students and pastors will treasure this highly useful and user-friendly distillation of Moiss Silvas excellent New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis. Scholars may still want the four-volume original, but even many of them may prefer Beethams thoughtful condensation for everything except the most technical work. There is nothing really comparable to Silvas work for its combination of linguistic savvy and theological acumen. All of that passes into this abridgement undiminished; the brevity enhances rather than dims the luster of the original.

STEVEN M. BRYAN , professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

Moiss Silvas painstaking work made NIDNTTE an indispensable tool for the next generation of biblical scholars. Now Beethams concise version makes it accessible for the next generation of pastors and students. This is the most significant single-volume reference work of its kind and ought to be found on every pastors desk.

CONSTANTINE R. CAMPBELL , author of Advances in the Study of Greek and Paul and the Hope of Glory

This important abridgment of its predecessor, so skillfully produced and user-friendly, is poised to make the kind of pedagogical and homiletical impact sorely needed in our day. Its focus on lexicography as the window to theology, with its essential concentration on semantic concepts in context, will not only help pastors in their day-to-day work but also model for students what to do when studying words. To this end, the Lists of Greek Words and Concepts are themselves invaluable resources. And Beethams proven exegetical expertise and keen theological eye have equipped him to be just the scholar to provide this timely labor of love. May it find its way into the pastors study and the students classroom, and may it serve to revive the serious study of Hebrew and Greek in both.

SCOTT J. HAFEMANN , honorary reader in New Testament, school of divinity, St Marys College, University of St Andrews

For decades, students, pastors, and scholars have relied upon the valuable insights contained in NIDNTT. Yet many of the articles contained in the original work by Colin Brown, and even the more condensed and updated version by Moiss Silva, offer insights (although helpful and illuminating) that are not immediately relevant to understanding the meaning of a given Greek word in a particular New Testament passage. Since comprehending the meaning of any word requires understanding the immediate historical and literary context in which it occurs, detailed discussions about what a Greek word meant in its ancient classical usage or its usage after the first century usually go beyond what is necessary for understanding that Greek word in its New Testament usage. Christopher Beetham has thus done a great service for those who study the New Testament. His CNIDNTTE preserves the essence of Silvas NIDNTTE and yet helpfully focuses on Greek writings that are roughly contemporaneous to the New Testament. This tool will serve a new generation of students, pastors, and scholars as they seek to understand the rich and varied language of the New Testament.

DANA M. HARRIS , professor of New Testament and department chair, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, author of An Introduction to Biblical Greek Grammar

If you want to dig even deeper into the meaning of biblical words, then this is the book for you. It is based on Moiss Silvas updated multivolume New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis, and Beetham has done an excellent job at culling out the best parts of this magisterial project and helping pastors and students see the heart of what the words mean in their biblical context.

WILLIAM D. MOUNCE , founder and president of biblicaltraining.org, author of Basics of Biblical Greek Grammar, Morphology of Biblical Greek, and Pastoral Epistles (Word Biblical Commentary)
