JANUARY 1
Pressing Toward the Goal

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:14

S etting a goal is an honorable thing to do, but discouragement can set in quickly if the goal cant be realized until the distant future. To keep your joy as you press toward your target, pay close attention to the positives that happen immediately... and then a week or a month down the road. Keep a journal; take note of every improvement, no matter how trivial it seems. For example, if your goal is to lose thirty pounds, dont record just weight but also the many other changes that happen: Are you sleeping better at night? Are your moods more stable? Have you had more energy for tasks like mowing the yard? Have you been less depressed? Have you noticed changes in your hair or skin? Many people have set out to lose pounds only to discover myriad fringe benefits, such as improved posture, that had a shocking impact on their lives and their outlook on life.

Living joyfully means focusing on the goal and all the perks along the way.

Lord, I want every single thing You have for me as I press toward my goals. Help me to see and appreciate all the little benefits along the way.

JANUARY 2
The Joy of Setting Goals

May He grant the dreams of your heart and see your plans through to the end.

Psalm 20:4 VOICE

A happy person has goals, both short-term and long-term. Smaller goals keep us motivated; as we reach them, were reminded that we can, in fact, achieve worthwhile things. Bigger, long-term goals help us to focus beyond ourselves and our everyday routines. Goals should be well-defined to keep us on trackwhen we know where were headed, were less likely to say yes to projects that arent meant for us. Finally, for the Christian, goals must always line up with Gods will and Word, which will keep us from wandering away from Him.

If you dont have distinct goals, determine to set three in one or more of the following areas:

Relational (designate one Girls Day Out each month with your daughter);

Emotional (work with a counselor on anger issues once a week);

Spiritual (read through Isaiah within the next month);

Health (get your cholesterol down twenty points within 90 days);

Creative (take a watercolor class); or

Intellectual/professional (increase your productivity by 15 percent this quarter).

Thank You for the grace to keep moving forward in my goals, Lord. May they always line up perfectly with Your will and call on my life.

JANUARY 3
So Little Time?

Dont imagine... that Gods timetable is the same as ours... for with the Lord, one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day.

2 Peter 3:8 VOICE

P eople with many interests sometimes struggle with feeling overloaded or very short on time. As a result, they might also be oblivious to their many blessings. Maybe youre juggling a pottery class, volunteer work, and a full Crossfit regimennot to mention three kids, a spouse, and a career. If so, you probably have little time left at the end of the week. So let something go, your spouse suggests, but if you love everything youre doing, its easier said than done!

If you lack the time to do everything you want to do, count it all joy by remembering that the alternative is satisfaction with the status quo. As someone said, People with many interests live not only longest but happiest. Those who keep their minds and bodies sharp by continuing to learn and develop are generally more joyful than those who take little interest in anything new.

And remember that, as the child of an infinite God, you have not just eighty years to explore life to the fullest, but an eternity.

Lord, thank You for making me curious about all the wonderful things in the world and giving me time to pursue them!

JANUARY 4
God-Dreams

Come, follow me, Jesus said.

Matthew 4:19

F ew things will bring joy to your life like knowing youre following the dreams God has put in your heart. Even when the process is difficult, its worth it just to know youre headed in the direction God has mapped out for you.

If youve lost your joy lately, make sure you havent deviated from the path youre meant to travel. Sadly, we can spend precious timesometimes even a lifetimefulfilling someone elses dreams. This isnt to say you mustnt sacrifice your life for another: spending yourself caring for a sick child or mentally ill sibling, for example, might well be Gods perfect will for you. Its not that life must be about you, but it must be about
