Introduction
The Lord give you peace!
St. Francis
A most beautiful quality of Francis was his courtesy. He welcomed all who came to him. And so we welcome you in your quest to discover his life and spirit in ways that may deepen and enliven your journey as a Christian.
Through the centuries, the Lord has gathered people together in the way of Francis. From the beginning, Francis had a vision for people living ordinary lives in the world but following the rule and example he laid out for the brothers living in community with him. That vision first evolved into the Third Order (also known as Secular Franciscans). Their rule, originating with Francis and updated most recently in 1978, can offer a helpful guide for people who want to live the Gospel according to the way of Francis in their own time and place.
In every age there are those who seek to live in the spirit in which Francis lived eight centuries ago. The heart of this book is the message of The Third Order Vocation , a book that caught the hearts of thousands of those who long to follow Francis when it first appeared some fifty years ago.
In 2001, that original small blue book was revised and published under the title To Live as Francis Lived . It retained the simplicity and the spirit of Franciscan living expressed by Franciscan Fathers Leonard Foley and Jovian Weigel while adding new material to harmonize with the new Rule of the Secular Franciscan Order approved by Pope Paul VI in 1978. Patti Normile, S.F.O., worked with Fr. Jovian to update the original material. She also added the prayers at the end of each reflection, as well as several new reflections.
Many people have used To Live as Francis Lived as a way to begin to explore a call to living Franciscan ideals in the midst of daily life. In this third iteration, we have tried to open this vision to people both in and beyond the Secular Franciscan community.
Suggestions on How to Use This Book
T his book is divided into reflections that can be used to span a year by contemplating one aspect of the Franciscan way each week. Through these fifty-two reflections, you will learn about the Franciscan way of life.
After reading and reflecting on the topic, consider the Questions for Reflection at the end. This is not an examination but an opportunity for you to express yourselfwhere you are going, where you are growing.
Connecting with Scripture suggests a Scripture reading on the theme of the reflection. If you are serious about living the Gospel, you need to know what Jesus said and did. Francis received his guidance from the Spirit by taking the Word of God very seriously, reading it regularly. We must do the same so that it may make a home in us.
Connecting with Franciscan Writings features a brief passage by or about Francis, Clare, and the Franciscan way of life. We hope this will whet your appetite for further reading. A list of resources at the back of the book can give you some suggestions for doing just that.
Consider the Application to Daily Life suggestions faithfully, prayerfully, and honestly to see how Francis is affecting your life. The way of Francis is not so much a way of thinking, as it is a way of living. We should feel a sense of urgency in following the way of the Lord, yet at the same time remain people of peace and hope.
Each reflection concludes with a brief prayer. That prayer is designed to continue your own conversation or listening time with the Lord. Carry it in your heart and mind throughout the week.
It is best to set a regular day and time for study. Make a commitment to a duration that will help you stay disciplined and able to absorb the material. You might want to begin a journal as well, writing down insights the Holy Spirit sends you, prayers and thoughts that enlighten you. You will find that you progress a great deal, even though the growth may seem almost imperceptible at the time.
Also set aside regular time for prayer. Pray any way you wish: in your own words, using a prayer book, using Scripture, the rosary, or some form of the Liturgy of the Hours.
