About the Course
A Course in Miracles was copyrighted in 1975 and published on June 26, 1976 by the Foundation for Inner Peace. It was scribed (through inner dictation) by Dr. Helen Schucman (19091981). Helen took down the Course in shorthand. She then read the notes to Dr. Bill Thetford (19231988), who typed up what she had taken down. The process began in October 1965 and ended in September 1972. Helen and Bill were both professors at Columbia University School of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City.
The Course consists of a Textbook, a Workbook, and a Manual for Teachers, plus two pamphlets that came from the same source as the Course. They are Psychotherapy: Purpose, Process & Practice and The Song of Prayer.
More than 2.5 million copies of the Course have been distributed in English. It has been translated into twenty-two different languages and there are several more translations in the works. Adding up the various translations, total sales are now in excess of 3 million. Respect for the Course has grown consistently since its publication. Having passed the test of time, it is now regarded by many as a modern spiritual classic.
Referencing A Course in Miracles
Quotations and paraphrasing from A Course in Miracles, unless otherwise designated, come from the third edition, published by the Foundation for Inner Peace. The location of the various quotes and paraphrases appears immediately after the reference with a listing of the chapter, section, paragraph, and sentence as in T-4.III.5:7. T means Text, 4 is the chapter, III is the section, 5 is the paragraph, and 7
is the sentence.
T: is for Textbook
W: is for Workbook
M: is for Manual for Teachers
C: is for Clarification of Terms
P: is for Psychology: Purpose, Process and Practice
S: is for The Song of Prayer
In: is for Introduction
R: is for Review
Other than in the Introduction, A Course in Miracles is referred to throughout as the Course.
I often put lines from the Course in bold for emphasis.
Only rarely does the Course boldface a word or phrase within a sentence.
Bracketed words sometimes appear inside quotes from the Course (added so the reader will understand what the word it or here or he, etc., refers to).
Quotations from the Bible are from the King James version, the version referenced within the Course and Dr. Helen Schucmans favorite translation.
If no source is given after a centered poem, rhyme, aphorism, or alliteration, its mine.
PART I
INTRODUCTION
If God created you perfect,
you are perfect.
T-10.IV.1:4
You do not live here.
We are trying to reach your real home.
We are trying to reach the place where you
are truly welcome. We are trying to reach God.

The Path to Happiness
What would it be like to have no worries, no anxieties, no problems, no major concerns? What would it be like to hold no grievances, no hurt feelingsmake no judgments? What would it be like to be consistently calm, patient, and serene? What if it were possible to experience the love of God flowing from our hearts to everyone we meet, all the time? What if we had no fear of deathno sense of limitation? What if we knew we were not a body? What would it be like to know eternity? What would it be like to know God?
No snowflake ever falls in the wrong place. Everything happens as it should, when it should, and as it can. Finding A Course in Miracles is not an accident, a stumble, a mistake, or a fall. No one is where they are by accident, and chance plays no part in Gods universe. Discovering A Course in Miracles is an auspicious, propitious part of being on the path of Self-discovery. Having found the Course, we are asked to maintain focus with consistency. We are being asked to do what weve always wanted to do, to be who we were meant to bewho we always have beenawake, alive, free of illusions and dreams.
