    WORSHIP HIM ONCE A DAY

Shout for joy to the L ORD , all the earth. Worship the L ORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.

    P SALM 100:1 2

What ideas or songs come to mind when you contemplate worshiping God? Some people think of a huge orchestra the best in the world playing full out with a chorale singing Handels Messiah or any other great work. Others might think of an acoustic guitar skillfully played and blending with the voice of a well-known singer in a worship chorus. Still others might draw a blank, either out of a fear of inadequacy this is the God of the universe were talking about, a God who has thousands of professional worshipers (angels) worshiping him all day or a lack of knowledge about worship. With the Once-a-Day Worship and Praise Devotional, you can see that worship is just as natural as breathing. It is a response of thanksgiving to the God who made everything and gave his life to save everyone.

Each days reading features an excerpt from a prayer in the Bible, a short meditation on that prayer that will help you focus your thoughts, and then a sentence you can use to start your own prayer. Although these daily readings begin with January 1, you can begin exploring the Bibles prayers on todays date.

The readings in Once-a-Day Worship and Praise Devotional express a wide range worship themes and emotions. Youll see the real and the raw glorious notes of worship, coupled with cries of agony. Through these readings, youll find the inspiration to come before God in worship just as you are.

Our hope and prayer is that the readings and Scriptures collected in this book will cause you to fall before the God who deserves your worship.

    FINE CRAFTSMANSHIP

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning the sixth day.

    G ENESIS 1:31

It was very good. That phrase seems an apt description when we look up at the night sky and see the stars God hung there and knows by name. We easily see excellence in a sunset so brilliantly hued that it takes our breath away, or in a pine tree stretching heavenward, its feathery branches moving with the breeze.

But what about when we look in the mirror, or when we look across the breakfast table at family members? The descriptor of very good applies to people as well as to nature. Of course, we go astray, wandering from his loving care into sin and its consequences. But in our essence and in the character of every human no matter how far fallen is excellence from Gods hand, excellence that reflects Gods image.

Part of what inspires that wonder is Gods creative abilities. Who else could have made the magnificent human body? Who but God could have invented the method whereby infants are conceived, grow and make their dramatic entry into the world? Who but God could have fashioned a solar system in which each part functions in precise relationship to the others?

Ask God to give you a new perspective on his creation, then thank him for his awesome works.

    ONLY MY BEST

And Abel also brought an offering fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The L ORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

    G ENESIS 4:4 5

Jeff planned to make a large donation toward the costs of the addition to the churchs Christian Education wing. But when Jeff got a call from the coordinator of childrens ministries asking him to be a volunteer in the nursery, he felt it was beneath him.

I dont really have time, he responded.

Like Cain, Jeff brought God what he wanted to bring, and he thought that was enough. Like Cain, he wanted to worship God in his own way, without considering what God wanted him to bring.

What about you? Have you brought God what you wanted to give without asking him what he wanted from you? Have you brought him a gift grudgingly?

The offering God wants most is the offering of our hearts, dedicated and fully turned toward him in a lifestyle of continual worship. Release your gifts, talents and abilities to him and ask him what kind of a sacrifice he wants from you. The answer might surprise you.

    GIVE ME A SIGN

I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.

    G ENESIS 9:13 15

Children delight in rainbows. They want to follow a rainbow to its end or run and jump through it if it appears in a spray of water. We tell children the story of Noah, and how Gods rainbow became a sign of Gods lasting promise that he will never again send a flood to destory life on earth. God doesnt always seal his promises with a visual sign; sometimes we see Gods promises reflected in other ways.

Consider Becky, a single mom with two toddler girls. She received no child support or other assistance from her ex-husband, and while Becky had a hard time making ends meet, somehow they managed. When the weeks groceries ran out a day early, a friend brought over a pizza. When she needed to pay a doctors bill, her tax refund came a month early. When it looked as though her weeks vacation would be spent at home with her two girls, a couple from church offered to let them stay in their cottage.

What rainbows do you see? Where do you witness Gods faithfulness to you? Look for it in the small needs he meets at just the right time. Credit his goodness when good fortune comes your way.

    PRAYER

    God, thank you

    A MONUMENTAL MISTAKE

Then they said, Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.

    G ENESIS 11:4

Part of what it means to be created in the image of God (see Genesis 1:27) is that we humans have the God-given capacity to make a difference. Yet our desire to leave a legacy can become twisted. We may forget that everything including ourselves has been created by God for God. We exist to do his bidding not the other way around.

The tower of Babel incident is a continuation of the ugly events begun in Eden. Can you hear the hissing of the serpent behind the scenes? Fill the earth? Obey God? Dont be ridiculous! Youre much better off serving your own desires! Cant you see how hes keeping good things from you? Your only hope for life is to throw off his oppressive rule and do your own thing.

Its easy to want to act like the people of Babel, to desire to build a personal monument to ourselves. Sometimes we do that through elevating our families, our possessions or our accomplishments above our devotion to God.
