F ifty-two devoted men of God helped to create the devotions in The Heart of Worship. We pray the truths you discover will open your heart to Gods blessings through praise, worship, and prayer. First Chronicles 16:10 says, Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the L ORD . As you read each devotion throughout the coming year, allow Gods truth to draw you ever closer to the heavenly Father.

It is our prayer that God will change your heart to be one of true worship as you spend time with Him and meditate on His Word every day.

    Praise Him!

The L ORD is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation; He is my God, and I will praise Him; my fathers God, and I will exalt Him.

    E XODUS 15:2

P salm 150 encourages us that if we have breath, we should praise the Lord. He is to be praised at all times and in every circumstance of life. As I buried the son of one of my best friends, the father praised the Lord for the 40-plus years he knew his son.

In Exodus 15 praise was appropriate because Israel had just witnessed and experienced Gods miraculous victory over the Egyptian army.

You cant read this verse without noting the personal pronouns. Four times the writer used my, and twice he used I. Just a little earlier Israel was helpless and dependent, now the Lord [was their] strength.

He is my God. Earlier God was distant at best, and now, He was their present personal Defender. Therefore, the proper response from them (and from us) should be: I will praise Him.

Each singer owned his portion of the song. Each word was individually relevant to his own life. What if this could happen in our Sunday worship? What if each of us sang as though the truths of the song spoke of us?

He became their song. They went from fearing and complaining to singing a song of victory. Can you think of a time when He came through for you?

I desire to lift Him up for He has done for me just as He did for my family before me. Exalt Him! One thing is for sure: God is worthy of our praise.

Lord Jesus, my eyes are on You today as the One who is to me what You were to Israel. I praise You. In Jesus name, amen.

    A New Bride

Then the man bowed down his head and worshiped the L ORD . And he said, Blessed be the L ORD God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His mercy and His truth toward my master. As for me, being on the way, the L ORD led me to the house of my masters brethren.

    G ENESIS 24:2627

A bride for Isaac was about to be the major reason for praise and worship in the life of Abrahams servant. The man had served Abraham well, and now his master had an important assignment: Go to the land from which I came and find my son, Isaac, a bride.

Abraham had prayed and believed the Lord would show Himself faithful in providing his servant direction and wisdom in finding his son a wife.

I cannot read the passage without thinking of my Master, almighty God. There was once a day when He sent His servant, the Lord Jesus Christ, on a mission to find a bride. He came bearing His Masters wealth and riches, which are His grace, mercy, forgiveness, and eternal life. He sought us out and pursued us just as Abrahams servant sought out Rebekah.

Like Abrahams servant, we certainly should bow our heads and worship our Master. We should realize how much we have to be grateful for, and this should serve as a great incentive for worship. Our Master did not forsake His mercy and His truth for His Son. Jesus came in obedience to His Fathers will. Certainly, God will also lead us, through the leadership of His Spirit, to meet His Son. One day Jesus will take us to His Masters house. Until then, lets worship our great Master while on earth.

Lord, Your mercies are new each day. In Jesus name, amen.

Relying on the Promises of God

Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and attack me and the mother with the children. For You said, I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

    G ENESIS 32:1112

T he main things that encourage me in prayer are the promises of God. I have often taught that its not our promises to God that matter the most, but His promises to us.

Have you ever feared someone? More specifically, have you ever feared a family member? Jacob was overwhelmingly fearful of his brother, Esau. And his prayer in todays passage was for Gods deliverance. Jacob knew his brother would want revenge for all that he had done to him in the past. Jacob was desperate to say the least.

Jacob cried out to God and reminded God of His promises, and not just promises in general, but promises God had made personally to his forefathers. God had promised Abraham that his descendants would have more children than sand on the seashore.

Have you ever felt the need to remind the Lord of His promises? I must confess, when I have sinned against the Lord, I find myself praying His promises back to Him. For instance, my heavenly Father, in 1 John 1:9 said He would forgive me if I confessed my sins. So I have prayed, Lord, I am coming to claim Your promise, to act upon Your word, and to take You at Your word.

Lord, I can begin with adoration in my prayer time because You have granted me access to Your throne through Your Son. In His name, amen.
