ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
F irst and foremost, I would like to thank those countless individuals who have sent accounts of their paranormal experiences to the Rhine Research Center over the years. And to my co-author, Mike, who first conceived the idea of this book and then worked so steadily to bring it to fruition. Last but not least, my husband, Bill Hendrickson, who cooked many a dinner while this book was under way.
Dr. Sally Rhine Feather
I would like to thank two fellow writers with ink in their blood for their encouragement and support in seeing this book to completion: my wife, Patricia, and my son, Christopher. My gratitude also goes out to Nat Sobel, our bulldog agent, to Diane Reverand, our passionate editor, to Regina Scarpa, our communications lifeline, and most of all to my co-author, Dr. Sally, whose wonderful stories and psychological insights brighten these pages.

PREFACE
C an some people really see the future? Read other peoples minds? Observe events unfold, as they happen, even when they take place hundreds or thousands of miles away from them?
Indeed they can.
This unusual, unpredictable but natural human ability is popularly called ESP, or extrasensory perception. ESP is the ability of the human mind to perceive or experience without the help of the five senses. The community of scientists studying ESP prefer the more neutral term psi, which carries less historical and emotional baggage than ESP. But both describe the same thinga sixth senseunlike our normal five senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, that operates outside the limits of space and time.
A 2001 Gallup Poll found that half of all Americans believe ESP is real, and 65 million Americans have personally experienced ESP. Skeptics still try to dismiss ESP, but the scientific evidence is substantial and continually growing.
I know, because I am a director of the Rhine Research Center and a parapsychologistsomeone professionally trained in the scientific study of ESP experiences. The Center is named after my father, the late Dr. J.B. Rhine, who, with my mother, Dr. Louisa Rhine, pioneered the scientific study of ESP in the United States starting in the 1930s at Duke University. My father took ESP into the laboratory and applied statistics, controlled experiments, and other scientific methods to establish the reality of ESP.
My fathers work has since been duplicated and further developed by other scientists working at the Rhine Research Center and at other institutions in the United States and Europe. The list includes Princeton University and universities in Germany, Sweden, Holland, England, and Scotland. Psychic phenomena have been studied by the Parapsychological Association, the Parapsychology Foundation, and the American Society for Psychical Research, which counts among its founders the renowned Harvard psychologist and professor of philosophy, William James. Respected private think tanks like the Stanford Research Institute and Science Applications International Corporation have studied ESP, and the U.S. Department of Defense has conducted significant research on an ESP technique called remote viewing.
