Introduction
When I think about the topic of UFOs and religion, the word Sankofa comes to my mind. Sankofa is an expression in the Ghanian language of Akan. Literally translated Sankofa means, It is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot. In other words, Sankofa, means that we must go back to reclaim our past so that we can move forward into the future. In this way, we gain an understanding regarding how and why we came to be who we are in this present moment.
The symbol of Sankofa is that of a large bird whose head is facing in the opposite direction of its body. The birds position emphasizes that although the bird is advancing. The Sankofa periodically makes a point to return, or to examine its past, since this is the only way to a better future.
There is an old African American saying that reminds us that we never forget the bridge that brought you over. However, this aphorism does not mean that any individual, or that humanity as a collective, must live in the past. The message is that only ones past is an important component and aspect of ones future. In order to make the best of ones future, one must periodically revisit the past. The fact remains that we are creating our future by the thoughts and actions we engage in the right here and now of the present moment.
My position from a religious and spiritual perspective, yes I am aware that they are not always the same thing, is that in order for humanity to move forward with a transformation of consciousness is directly related to how we can better serve and love each other and this planet of ours. We must not be afraid to revisit, with fresh eyes and open hearts, the beginnings of our religious teachings on this planet.
This reexamination includes entertaining the probability that these religious and spiritual teachings originated, just as our very existence here on this planet has originated, from contacts with off-world intelligences or Star Visitors. For those of you familiar with my first book, Alien Scriptures: Extraterrestrials In The Holy Bible, you already know that my position is that these Visitors are not really visitors at all. They are intelligences that have visited and resided on the Earth for centuries. Neil Freer writes in his book Breaking the Godspell:
As it turns out, the Bible presents us with an extremely accurate history. What is true about the Bible-based thinkers belief is that the Bible contains revelation; what is inaccurate is that the revelation came from a supernatural being; it came actually from a creator that was humanoid but technically advanced.
It is also important to note that what I am writing about here is not a new discovery, but a rediscovery. Our ancient ancestors recorded what they saw and heard as accurately as they could. Any misinterpretation has been the result of our contemporary exegesis.
For the record, I will not use the name alien to describe these Visitors. I find the word personally repugnant and I refrain from using it. I am not the first to have taken this position, and hopefully I will not be the last. I do know that words are powerful. Perhaps I should say that the intent behind our words are what makes them powerful. Words help create reality. This idea is also the secret to what we call prayer.
However, no one wants to be alienated or to be called and treated like an alien, whether they originate from this planet or beyond. I have even taught my daughter not to use the word alien as well. I personally find the words, Star Visitor or Extraterrestrial much more palatable. From what I have experiencedso do they. These Visitors are children of the cosmos just as we are. They are not perfect beings and neither are we. Perhaps you too have read stories in the UFO literature of human beings being taken from their homes at night and being returned to the wrong homes. We all make mistakes. Perhaps this notion will humble both of ushuman and Visitor alike.
The purpose of A New World If You Can Take It is twofold. First of all, I would like to encourage the reader to revisit some of our biblical texts to see if we can rediscover what it is our ancestors were trying to tell us about the world they lived in and about the experiences they had with our Visitors. We need not toss the proverbial baby out with the bath water. Perhaps, we can come to a better understanding of who we are as a species and where we may be headed in the not-too-distant future.
For some readers, this text may be a difficult read. Why? Because the beliefs a person holds determines the way he or she perceives realty. This concept is not easy stuff to digest. For some readers, my conclusions will be threatening. Perhaps this is because, as Abraham Maslow noted, above all, we fear what is godlike in ourselves. Maslow may have been on to something. As a fellow human being I can understand how this material can be threatening to everything one has been taught to believe. It was for me as well when I initially began to take this information seriously. I understand that fully, for I am asking readers for a paradigm shiftwhich is never an easy task. Yet, I feel it will be a necessary realignment as we live deeper into the 21 st century and beyond. Religious writings are there for all of us to see. These texts are not limited to the book we call the Bible, though that is the focus of much of this book. Let us bear in mind that history, at least from a Western perspective, is a written story or tradition.
We tend to look at history, not only in a linear fashion, but as a fixed set of facts and dates. A more accurate perspective may be to see the records of our past as a collection of subjective impressions, often written a considerable time after the event took place by many writers and editors. It is the editors who have possibly decided to delete or revise some of the material based on cultural, political, or other biases. These pressures for deletions or revisions have created a problem for us greater than the original authors words would have held for their intended audience. However, for many in the world today, the Bible is a book that is the literal inerrant word of God. I prefer to say that the Bible is perhaps the inspired word of who or what our ancestors believed was God.
I say this simply because if the Bible was in fact dictated by God, we would not have the numerous errors that we find within the text. Once you digest that there are errors in the Bible, perhaps we can accept the contradictions for what they arehuman error. Again this is not to denigrate the Bible, but merely to state that there are inconsistencies in the text.
