I quote from, and recommend your reading of How Readest Thou? by J. C. Ryle, 1816-1900, Bishop of Liverpool, whose picture graces the cover of this book.
No book in existence contains such important matter as the Bible.
There is an extraordinary depth, fullness, and richness in the contents of the Bible. It throws more light on a vast number of most important subjects than all the other books in the world put together. It boldly handles matters which are utterly beyond the reach of man, when left to himself. It treats of things which are mysterious and invisiblethe soul, the world to come, and eternitydepths that man has no line to fathom. All who have tried to write on these things, without Bible light, have shown little but their own ignorance.
The Bible alone gives a true and faithful account of man. It does not flatter him as novels and romances do. It does not conceal his faults and exaggerate his goodness
The Bible alone gives us true views of God. By nature man knows nothing of Him. All his conceptions and ideas of Him are low, groveling, and debased.
But time would fail me, if I were to enter fully into all the great things which the Bible reveals. It is not by any sketch or outline that the treasures of the Bible can be displayed. It would be easy to point out many other things, beside those I have mentioned, and yet the half of its riches would be left untold.
From Leviticus, that symbolizes the life and death of Jesus Christ, and the Song of Songs, that pictures the personal relationship of the believer with her Bridegroom, I have been greatly blessed in searching the scriptures for this book. To be honest, this is the first time I have delved into these books, apart from the occasional reference. I am greatly blessed and amazed at the depth and accuracy of Gods Word.
Search from the book of the Lord, and read: Not one of these shall fail For My mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them Isaiah 34:16.
Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; for they are ever with me Psalm 119:97-98.
Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up Deuteronomy 11:18-19.
PRAYER SERIES #1
Reading: Habakkuk 3:17-19
The LORD God is my strength Habakkuk 3:19.
A t the commencement of this series of thoughts on the prayers of the Bible, I would like to share with you why I feel led to do so.
I have never been satisfied with my prayer life; actually, I have talked with very few believers that are. Many of you who read these TFTWs know my testimony, of how I wanted nothing to do with God for twenty-three years. In retrospect, I am convinced I fell into such a spiritual state because I did not know how to pray.
One of the things that has helped me greatly since God restored me to Himself, is taking note of the prayers offered up by Gods people in the Bibleand praying them myself.
Davids prayer life is exposed in great detail in the Psalms, and it is a great blessing to pray them personally as just about every aspect of life is addressed.
Prayer is not a mysterious practice reserved only for clergy and the religiously devout. Prayer is simply communicating with Godlistening and talking to him. Believers can pray from the heart, freely, spontaneously, and in their own words.
If prayer is considered to be conversing or communication with God, then the first instance of prayer is found in Genesis 3: 8-19, where it is recorded that God called to Adam and said to him, Where are you?
In this series, I would like to consider some prayers where Gods servants come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Heb 4:16).
I am very grateful that some of the prayers of the Puritans have been preserved for us. In no way do I place myself on the same par with them spiritually, but, when reading their biographies, I can identify with many of the spiritual battles they faced. This is, of course, because Satan uses the same strategies today as he did in their day. This is also applicable when I read the prayers of both Old and New Testament saints.
It is my prayer that God will use these Thoughts From The Word to His praise and glory as together we may be drawn into a deeper realization of the high honor and privilege that is ours as we communicate with the Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, Jesus, our Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit, who takes our stammering words and Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God Romans 8:27.
What is the foundation for our prayers? What gives us the right to pray? Why do we think it is not a waste of time to pray? These are all good questions, and the Bible gives us the answer.
Remember the word (Your promise NLT) to Your servant, upon which You have caused me to hope Psalm 119:49.
The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe Proverbs 18:10.
Our prayers must be based on Gods Word to us. When we read the promises He has made, we must believe as did Abraham:
He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform Romans 4:20-22.
We must not be like the Chinese worshiper who stood before a temple door and threw a dart at it. He believed his prayer would be answered by his god if the dart stuck, but, if it did not stick and fell off the door, his prayer would not be answered. A true believer must pray with the confidence that God hears our prayer and answers according to His will. Prayer is not a hit-or-miss practice, hoping God will hear and answer.
