INTRODUCTION The idea of a powerful presence above us is a haunting concept - photo 2

INTRODUCTION

The idea of a powerful presence above us is a haunting concept, and for thousands of years the minds of human beings have struggled with this idea. Most people are aware of this, either through their culture, education or religion, some through ufology and others through fairy tales, or even the science fiction seen in movies and on TV and so on. There are also countless testimonies about strange manifestations that can be attributed to such a presence; and in the latter years of the twentieth century as information transparency increased, they have become more and more visible especially via the internet. The reported cases have too many common features to be considered as just the simple products of human imagination. This is not just wishful thinking; something truly strange is happening all around us.

Science will say that these testimonies even if they are in their millions do not prove anything, because they talk about miracles or magic and that is impossible according to the known laws that govern the Universe. To challenge these laws, testimony must be backed up by testable hard evidence. If required they should be observed by sceptics and possibly experimented with in laboratories in a repeatable manner, but unfortunately this is not always possible.

Religions recognise the existence of a superior power, as well as testimonies based on miracles and Divine revelations, but here we encounter another problem. Each of the different religions is convinced that it, and only it, is the one which holds the ultimate truth on the nature of the superior power above us. But there are over ten thousand religions in the world, one hundred and fifty of them having at least one million followers each. And the ultimate truths of some of them sometimes fundamentally contradict those of others. The dispute to prove who is right has lasted for thousands of years and although it has been bathed in the blood of millions of martyrs, no agreement has been reached regarding who is right. And there is no sign that, in the foreseeable future, a solution will be obtained that everyone will accept. On the contrary.

To the above is added the additional problem that science vocally denies what religions support. The European philosophy of the last few centuries has found a palliative solution to overcome this contradiction, by claiming that there are in fact two distinct realities that exist in two worlds. One is an imminent material one, in which science is the appropriate method and another is transcendent, immaterial and spiritual, which is the domain of religion and philosophy. This is obviously a provisional solution, because the miracles, which all religions embrace, are happening in the material world, so the two worlds cannot be broken apart. The truth is that we live in a unique and indivisible reality that embraces both the material and the immaterial.

This book is an essay, which aims to respond to the problems outlined above using the hypothesis of hyper-civilizations . This explanation, although not the only one, seems to me the most rational because, based what we know today, it can clarify many disputed phenomena and it is also difficult to dismiss. The basic idea behind this hypothesis has been debated by many people, but, as far as I know, this is the first time it has been assembled into its main issues as a coherent whole.

The arguments contained in the following pages address the concerns of both sceptics with a scientific background and those who accept the reality of the mysteries that surround us. It also addresses both the uninformed reader and those already familiar with the issues raised. But it is addressing, in a very special way, those who feel that they care about the future of our earthly civilization. The main prerequisites are for the reader to be willing to accept that reality may sometimes be very different from what they believe it to be, or as it is described in school books, and also that no one holds the ultimate answer.

Id like to express my gratitude to friends who, through long discussions, helped me to crystallise the ideas outlined here and to the ufologists and thinkers from various domains who provided many of the facts and arguments used in my exposure. Special thanks goes to the veteran UK UFO researcher Philip Mantle, for his initiative in publishing a book about hyper-civilizations, and for his editorial effort, including the hard work required in transforming my raw text in to readable English.

THE FERMI PARADOX

The Drake equation

It is said that in 1950, Enrico Fermi, the Italian physicist who discovered nuclear fission, was talking with his colleagues about the existence of other civilizations in the Universe. He noted that if there are such civilizations, then some of them must have appeared long before mankind and their representatives would have had enough time to explore our galaxy and reach Earth. Therefore, we ought to have been visited long ago and many times over, but there are no signs of such visits. Fermi summed up this fact using the rhetorical question: They should be here, but we dont see them anywhere. Where are they? Since then this problem has been known as the Fermi Paradox .

In the following pages I will try to present some possible answers to this question, as well as some other enigmas which are connected with it. But before that, I ask the readers permission to present some details, perhaps a bit technical, without which these answers could not be properly understood. At the same time I am asking for the understanding of the informed reader, for whom these things are perhaps superfluous.

We all live on a tiny, blue, cosmic island that we call the Earth; it is one of many heavenly bodies orbiting around the Sun. The Sun, in turn, is just one of about 200 billion stars contained in a spiral conglomerate called a Galaxy , or in our case the Milky Way , and on clear nights we can see it above us in the sky. To understand the dimensions of only the part of universe, which is accessible to our instruments, we should note that in it there are at least 150 billion other galaxies similar to ours. And there could be other worlds beyond this universe. These values are confusing, therefore I advise the reader to be careful considering the kind of numbers we will use in this book, because the human mind cannot fully comprehend such great values, and the sheer scale can lead to confusion.

According to some estimates made by astronomers, in November 2013, in our galaxy alone, there would be about thirty two billion planets on which there may be life. But for the overwhelming majority of them, life is only at the microbial level. It is estimated that on several thousand of these planets, life could reach the diversity of the Earths biosphere. But only in a very small number of these worlds beings would emerge who are smart enough to build a technological civilization similar to the one we live in, with Internet, space craft, genetic engineering and nuclear capability etc.
