Introduction:
What Are Demons?
Picture 12

D emons. Jinn. Shedu .

Whatever you call them, whatever religion or culture from which you view them, their definition is similar: an evil, malevolent supernatural being. Their goal is to seduce humans to corruption and enslave them to serve evil instead of good.

For many religions, demons are very real beings, a central concept, in fact, in the development of their theologies. And while many consider these ideas mere concepts representing mankinds inner struggles as in the phrase wrestling with our demons just about every culture, every religion and every nation has a belief about these very active supernatural beings.

Demons, moreover, are not to be confused with ghosts or spirits. Ghosts or spirits are best described as the lingering presence of the departed who have yet to transcend to he next plane. While they theoretically may be evil, not every entity is inherently so. They are merely humans in a different form.

A demon, on the other hand, occupies a completely different realm. Some cultures even say they live in a parallel universe invisible to the vast majority of us. A demon, strictly speaking is a supernatural being that was originally created as distinct creature from mankind. This report exams and explains demons and the study of these creatures, which is called demonology, from the perspective of several different religions and cultures. Among the viewpoints are Christian, Jewish, Islamic, African and ancient European.

Surprisingly, demons, regardless of their culture or religion of origin share many of the same traits. They may answer to different names, but their intent crosses cultural and religious lines. While they can all be placed in a single classification, youll soon discover that demons can be viewed on an individual nature as well. Cultures and religions have their own list of demons, naming each and in some instances assigning individual names to them.

The study of these beings, called demonology, has also grown more intricate throughout the ages. Perhaps best example of this is seen in the present day Catholic Church in particular and Christian demonology in general.

Youll discover as you read the pages of this book that demons play a tangible role in religions, cultures and folklore worldwide. The similarities of the demons whatever they may be called seem to outweigh the cultural differences. And perhaps most important of all, the presence of these beings still influence the daily lives of many individuals worldwide.

Chapter 1:
Demons in Christian Theology
Picture 16

T he word demon actually has several meanings in Christian theology throughout history. But they all refer to the concept of a spirit that is housed within a person or a place. The origin of the word comes to us from the Greek language where the words connotation made no distinction between a good or evil spirit. It wasnt until later, during the medieval period of Christian history, that demon came to encompass solely evil spirits.
