Introduction
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.
Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
A re we really alive? This question has been asked by some of the brightest minds to ever exist and postulated by ancient philosophers. Recent scientific studies are trying to answer that very question with surprising results. Some ancient teachings, when studied closely, suggests that this entire reality may only exist because we think it exists.
W hile there are many different theories surrounding the computerised simulation hypothesis, there are equal amounts that go far beyond the probable or explainable, from our existence being just a brain in a jar to Earth being a tiny component on a circuit board.
H aving a background in Computer Science I will endeavour to answer questions of our reality from the view of us being pieces of software existing within, and interacting with, various other pieces of software.
B eing housed inside a simulated world may seem like an outrageous prospect but it is very probable that we wouldnt even notice. If a lab rat is born in a dark box, having never experienced light, and goes on to procreate, creating further generations of rats who never grow up being exposed to light, would these creatures even know what light was? Could it even be perceived in their minds eye? Just because we live here, experience pain, perceiving our existence as real does not mean it is real.
Science suggests that you may not really exist
Technology has advanced more in the last thirty years than in the previous two thousand. The exponential increase in advancement will only continue.
Niels Bohr (1885-1962)
S cience has made remarkable leaps since the end of the Dark Ages, with some of the most interesting discoveries being made in the last 100 years. With the creation of the C.E.R.N. Super Collider and the remarkable work being done in String Theory we are extremely close to the answers of everything from how the universe was created to what governs everything around us. String Theory even goes so far as to discover what existed in our reality from before the creation of the universe itself.
O ur modern-day science has brought us closer than ever to creating our own realistic virtual environments that could house a similar number of intelligent human characters as well as all the plants, animals, buildings, transport systems, and communication technologies that currently occupy our own reality.
S ome recent scientific discoveries even point to the possibility that reality, as we know it, may not be as real as we believe it to be.
Double-slit experiment
The particles that are the very building blocks of all things, are in all possible locations until observation/measurement causes them to choose a specific position.
Kevin Michel,
Moving Through Parallel Worlds To Achieve Your Dreams
T he double slit experiment, in its easiest form, involves:
- Light source
- Board with two rectangular slits
- Solid board
The experiment involves passing light through the board with the rectangular slits and measuring what happens when this light hits the solid board. The light that hits the solid board should show bright and dark areas because light has a wavelength and such a light and dark pattern is indicative of a wave. While this is the expected result, Einstein suggested that the light would also contain particles of matter, which do not contain any wavelength meaning that they cant possible show as a wave. Matter should give a uniform pattern rather than an interference pattern as shown with waves.
W hen we fire smaller pieces of matter, such as electrons we start to get an interference pattern like the wave, but this should not be possible. The pattern should be uniform. It was theorised that the electrons were interfering with each other by colliding as they were being fired through the slits. It was decided to fire electrons one at a time to confirm such collisions but after enough of these particles were fired through the slits they still created the same interference pattern.
T he conclusion was that a single electron would leave the source, clone itself with both electrons (still part of a single electron) and pass through both slits, then collide with itself before hitting the board. When the mathematical calculations of this experiment are taken into account things begin to get very strange. Mathematically the electron goes through both slits, neither slit, just one slit, and the other slit.
T o determine what was going on it was decided to measure which slit the electrons were passing through but once the measuring equipment was in place the electrons suddenly started acting like particles and began to form a uniform pattern instead of an interference pattern. The very act of observing the electrons suddenly changed their behaviour making the electron act differently than expected. Did the electrons know that they were being observed?
String theory
All that we are is a result of what we have thought.
Buddha (c. 563-483 BC)
S tring theory is a higher theory of science that tries to explain what happened before the big bang and says that there are an infinite amount of other universes, which scientists refer to as the Multiverse. String theorists believe that the big bang happens when one of these universes splits in two or by two or more universes colliding. It is believed that we can theoretically travel from one universe to another through a wormhole.
S tring theory also states that every single thing in the universe is connected to everything else through imperceptible strings. This connection would be made on the sub-atomic level and was described in 1930 by Einstein who called this connection the Spooky Action at a Distance paradox. This means that if you interfere with one particle it will have an effect on other particles that could potentially be located on the other side of the known universe.
