Speaking to Influence: Mastering Your Leadership Voice: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Speaking to Influence: Mastering Your Leadership Voice" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

When you speak, whether on stage, in a meeting or on the telephone, ask yourself:

  • Do you feel confident and captivate your audience?
    • Do you command the room naturally, and feel like you are completely connecting with your audience?
    • Do you feel like you get the full respect you deserve and the results you want?
    • Are you recognized as a leader that people genuinely want to follow and support?
    • Have you built a positive, sustainable corporate culture center around loyal, cooperative and effective teams, and strong, lasting client relationships?
    • Have you reached your greatest potential?

If youre like most people, your response to many and even most of these questions is, No, but I want to! If thats the case, then this book is for you. Speaking to Influence is all about helping you understand how the way that you speak has a powerful effect on your ability to influence your surroundings, your relationships, your reputation, and your potential to succeed. If you feel stuck, like youve hit a plateau in life then this book will show you how to take a step back and assess how your current style of communication is keeping you from achieving the results you want and maximizing your powers of influence.

We all suffer from a fatal Blindspot: that Blindspot is the distinction between how we think we come across when we speak, and how other people actually perceive us and interpret what weve said. Want proof? Have you ever had an argument where one person says, Why are you mad? What did I say? And the response is, Its not what you said, its how you said it! Well, the truth is both what you say and how you say it are critically important to having people understand not only your content, but also your intent. It crystallizes how you actually feel about what youre saying, and as a result, how others should feel about it and respond.

The disconnect between the words you use and the way you deliver them sabotages productive conversation and leads you and the other person into a downward spiral of miscommunication, frustration and even hurt feelings. Nevertheless, one thing remains consistent: Whether you think its because they werent listening, theyre too sensitive, they are just plain rude, or they simply dont care, youre quick to assume that its the other persons fault. But what if there was something in the way you were communicating that allowed that to happen, facilitated it, or even caused it?

In Speaking to Influence, Dr. Laura Sicola walks you through the three key channels of speech communication and how they need to work together for people not just to get it when you talk, but also to get you. Youll explore strategies in storytelling for impact, how people can see what you look like even when youre talking on the telephone, hidden fillers to avoid, and how to identify and control common vocal habits that creep into your speech and undermine your credibility.

Image consultants often say that people make their initial judgment of you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. I say the next seven seconds matter even more, because thats when you open your mouth and prove whether or not their first instinct was correct.

    PREFACE

In that direction, the Cat said, waving its right paw round, lives a Hatter: and in that direction, waving the other paw, lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: Theyre both mad.
But I dont want to go among mad people, Alice remarked.
Oh, you cant help that, said the Cat: were all mad here. Im mad.
    Youre mad.
How do you know Im mad? said Alice.
You must be, said the Cat, or you wouldnt have come here.
Lewis Carroll. Alices Adventures in Wonderland.

One of the most maddening experiences is when you make a seemingly simple point in conversation, only to have it escalate into a mind-boggling maze of misinterpretations, clarifications, ruffled feathers, debate, embarrassment, circular arguments, or worse. Perhaps equally frustrating is to make a great point, only to have it fall on deaf ears. It gets glossed over, as if you had never said it in the first placeor worse, the response is as if you werent even there in the room. Either way, you know that you are not making the impact you want to make, if you are indeed making any impact at all.

Its during these moments that your instinctive reflex is to blame the other person, and ask yourself, Whats wrong with them? Why dont they understand what I mean? Why cant they see that Im right, how important this issue is, and how great my idea is?

Its easy to feel like youve entered some fictional world like Lewis Carrolls Wonderland, where everyone is mad (in the sense of crazy, not angryalthough thats often the case as well). And once youve had enough of these conversations, you may start to believe that the Cats final assessment might be right after all: you must be mad too, otherwise, why would your conversations keep following the same patterns?

Thats why, in attempt to keep a bit of humor within the context of discussing an incredibly important topicinfluential leadership communicationeach chapter in this book begins with a quotation from Carrolls Alices Adventures in Wonderland or Through the Looking Glass. Carrolls masterful word play allows his characters to unabashedly and unapologetically break all sorts of rules regarding everything from simple manners and social etiquette to sports matches and courtroom procedures.

In reading the stories in general and the selected quotes in particular, its easy to appreciate the cleverness in the way the Mad Hatter, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and others twist Alices words around and challenge her assumptions about what is normal, good, and right. It can be rather sobering, however, when similarly unprovoked challenges come our way.

With that, I invite you to join me and take a tumble down the dark rabbit hole as we explore what creates that sense of madness when we interact with others, regardless of the context. While I cant promise that youll wake up to realize it was all a dream, as Alice did, I can promise to share with you the tools necessary to help you make sense of the madness and find your way to the clarity of daylight.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

There are so many people without whose help and support this book would not have been possible. As I initially sat to write this, a fleeting concern was that some of it would sound repetitive, like the acknowledgements Ive made in earlier works. Then I realized how beautiful that is: to have a core group of people who continue to inspire, love, and support me, in addition to the wonderful new additions who have more recently entered my life. It is an honor and a pleasure to recognize them here.
