Introduction

The Leadership Handbook of Management and Administration provides a comprehensive reference for those who manage and administer the work of ministry. This book, conceived and compiled by the editors of Leadership journal and copublished by Christianity Today International, and Baker Book House Company, covers day-to-day practical matters regarding the pastors personal management, ministry transitions, leadership, supervision of paid staff and volunteers, church management, and finances.

How to Use This Book

While many will read this series from cover to cover to augment their systematic understanding of the practice of Christian ministry, others may reach for this specific volume seeking reference information on a subject of interest. Articles are arranged topically by sections, so the following features will help you find what you seek:

Table of contents . Look here for a complete listing of the topics covered. Articles are titled for clarity rather than artistry in order to give you a clear understanding of the subject matter. Authors names accompany article titles.

Main subject headings . This volume is divided into seven main subject areas, denoted by Parts I through VII. Here you find sets of articles on Personal Management, Transitions, Leadership, Paid-Staff Supervision, Volunteer-Staff Supervision, Management, and Finances. Each of these main sections is divided into several chapters by subject.

Chapter essays . Each of the thirty-eight chapters is anchored by a main essay that covers the central issues of the topic. Look for the title to indicate the chapters specific subject matter.

Brief sidebar articles . Most chapters contain a number of articles that cover a specific aspect of the subject at hand. If a chapter essay doesnt appear to address your needs, a sidebar probably will fit the bill. The sidebars provide background and insights in addition to those found in the chapter essays.

Knowing the books logic, you can take a trial run at finding a topic. Suppose youre planning to call an associate pastor and want to research how to do it well. Looking among the seven main subjects, you find Paid-Staff Supervision, and in that section theres a chapter on Calling Ministerial and Program Staff. Bingo! Further examination finds several sidebars in that chapter that will also prove useful. A look in the index would also turn up the articles by topic.

More Than Information

Authors names can be found at the beginning of the articles, at the end of the sidebars, and in the index. Information about the authors is in the Contributors section that follows this introduction. At the end of most of the chapter essays, you will find Resources, a combination of references and bibliography for further study.

In the Leadership Handbook of Management and Administration , you will find over five hundred pages of counsel directed toward those of us who do the work of pastoral ministry. Combining insights from biblical theology, scholarly pursuits, and years of practical experience, the writers have one purpose: to help pastors and other Christian workers more effectively serve our Lord Jesus Christ through leading his people into abiding faith and fulfilling ministry. May the Lord bless us and keep us in this sacred trust.
