Foreword

Kate Emmerson is the product of glitches ditched. I can think of no one better to bring others through this challenging journey. In my 20 years of practice, I have witnessed patients wrestle with self-limiting, fear-based beliefs, which rob them of the elegance of success. While each of us is capable of fleeting victories, that glitch is a scythe to success, chopping us off at the knees each time we venture beyond our self-imposed limitations.

My journey as a keen observer, friend and exponent of Kates has allowed me to witness her metamorphosis as shes ditched her own glitches. Starting out in practice as a young homeopath and acupuncturist, I shared an office with Kate. Her effervescent personality and client-centric attitude engender instant magnetism, which is portrayed in her writing. It is this same client-centric altruism that allows her to bare her own story, revealing her vulnerability. It is never easy to expose your own issues as an example for others to learn from, which epitomises her passion and dedication to her audience.

The true value of this book is that Kates teaching, combined with her vulnerability, gives her inimitable authority. Her authority in her subject and teaching stems from her ability to own her stuff without apology or excuse. However, do not be lulled by her altruism and care, as she demands stringent commitment to shifting, with definite ferocity.

Many self-help books make a great read and are more a theoretical treatise than practical tool. I have seen my fair share of self-help book junkies, who use their latest read as a temporary salve to massage into their emotional wounds and ease their pain as long as they are between its covers. Ditch your Glitch , you can be sure, is going to challenge you to effect long-overdue changes. Finally, you can jettison the corrosive self-limitations that hamper the cogs of your success machine. Kate will support you in this arduous journey, while you learn skills that are forgiving, boundary creating, un-limiting and not fear based.

There are times when I THINK that the process of writing a book is profoundly simple you have an idea, you sit your bum on your chair, and you type, type, type. Then some time later, voil, a manuscript is complete and that becomes a book on a shelf. Simple!

Then there are times when I let myself FEEL that it is the most profoundly difficult journey one can willingly undertake. We need to become someone different in the conception, creation and completion of a book. I needed way more support for this book than for my first one, which I wrote two years ago. Gremlins abounded and confounded me at every turn will this book be as well-received as my first?, what if I have nothing life-changing to say? and all the rest of the self-belittling jabber we tell ourselves. The irony is that it is the exact topic contained in these pages, so I was able to use the practical exercises in this book to re-work through my own stuff. Then I just let myself write, stick to deadlines, re-write, re-work, take out, find new, panic, breathe, laugh, cry, get angry, dislike the manuscript, love the manuscript. Complicated!

In a flash of inspiration (perhaps desperation) I created a mastermind group of other writers who wanted to complete a book too. That wonderful journey has accompanied the pulling together and writing of this book. I am indebted to each of you for your support and bravery in tackling your own manuscripts and sharing bum time with me, as we fondly call it. Your support kept me going, and I was constantly inspired by your stories.

I also wish to acknowledge all my family and teachers in life, who demand that I stretch myself. Whether your influence on me has appeared outwardly as positive or negative, it has undoubtedly shaped my life to what it is today. A life I love!

I acknowledge every single person I have ever met. When I write, a word, a sentence or an idea will often bring up spontaneous flashbacks to moments on my journey in life. They could be once-off interactions: meeting a person after a talk, a smile to a stranger on the subway, watching someone on a street corner. Sometimes theyre from my life-long relationship with my family, a best friend, my soul sister, people who were once my friends, my challengers and prodders, or colleagues. These flashbacks give me a glimpse of who I am and what I still have left to do on my path.

To all my clients who have dared to allow me to enter your lives and who share stories here to inspire others with your courage: Bless you for doing the work. You are brave and inspirational.

A massive thank you to my very supportive friends, clients and colleagues who helped me crowd-fund another special project that happened simultaneously to this book. Your support and belief in me helped to bring my energy back to this book with ease.

My life is full and beautiful, even when there are tears to process and potatoes to bash, and for that I thank YOU, yes, YOU.

There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.

Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

Introduction

When you are ready to make changes, it can be useful to have someone who sees your highest potential, without all your stories and excuses, your past and your mishaps. So while you are doing this work, imagine that I am sitting with you. My clients always say they think of me offering them a safe space, encouraging ear and kick up the proverbial when its needed. I aim to be that mirror for you, and the voice that will sit on your shoulder nudging you on.
