ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
For the entirety of my life, and anything good or decent or creative or wonderful I may have done with it, I thank my dearest friend and closest companion, God.
I have never known such a wonderful friendshipthat's exactly what it feels I have going hereand I want never to miss an opportunity to acknowledge it. I am so glad that life has given me the opportunity to explain to everyone in minute detail just how to develop such a friendship, and how to use it. For God wants most of all to be used. And that's what we want as well. We want a relationship with God that's functional and useful. The ways in which you might create such a relationship are explored in the wonderful book Friendship with God. If you have not yet read that book, I surely encourage you to do so.
Next, I want to thank my publishers (who are very much, come to think of it, like God). I have met few people in my life with the courage and the integrity I have found in Robert S. Friedman, publisher at Hampton Roads Publishing Company, the man who first placed Conversations with God before the public by taking a terrific gamble, and Susan Peterson Kennedy, president of Penguin Group USA, who took an equally large gamble by placing the book into hardcover and causing it to be distributed around the world.
I am certain that there are no nicer, more sincere, more literarily sensitive, honest, and powerfully effective people in the publishing industry, and I consider it one of the highest honors of my life to have come to know both of them. Bob and Susan, my thanks continue to this very day, now many years later, and can never be enough.
My thanks go as well to Don Stewart of Klamath, California, who found CwG so exciting that he came to one of our retreats, then went home and reread the book line by line in order to help me put together the Additional Inquiries questions at the end of many of the chapters of this companion. While I've added a few, most of the questions were first dreamt up by Donso if they're a bit tough in places (and also very helpful in increasing your comprehension of the material), you have him to thank for being the meanie at the front of the classroom who will not let you go home until you've learned it all.
In my personal life, my thanks go to many, including the teammates at the ReCreation Foundation, the nonprofit organization that has worked now for well over a decade to carry the freedom-giving messages of CwG into the world. These wonderful people make it possible to achieve the impossible, and only by their doing everything else could I have ever been able to put together this companion. My deep gratitude to Will Richardson, Patty Hammett, Kate Fenley, and Michelle Woods.
I am indebted, too, to Rita Curtis, who has been my close associate in this work since the earliest days, acting as events director, scheduling coordinator, and media rep; she made a major contribution to this work. Likewise, Donna Corso, a truly extraordinary personal assistant, who helps me with so many aspects of day-to-day lifeand has done so for years. And, as well, Mari Dickinson, my long-time house manager, without whom I'd be walking around in circles most every day.
I have had many friends in my life and some wonderful people who have been close to me. I owe them all my deep thanks for helping me to grow and for allowing me to make my worst behavioral mistakes at their expense. I wish I could have grown up faster.
Now, as I make the final trek of a long journey on this planet, I am blessed with a companion who more perfectly mirrors me than anyone else I have ever known. My highest acknowledgement and deepest appreciation go to my wife, Em Claire. How she puts up with me I don't know. And that she does so with such humor and grace, offering sparkling insights with compassion and love, is a miracle of which I am in no way worthy. Thank you, my Other, for all that you are and all that you do. I am so in love with you!
