DISCOVERY GOD'S WILL AND HEARING HIS VOICE
Introduction
God has a wonderful plan for your life. This plan is directly connected to His perfect will.
DISCOVERING His perfect will come about progressively as we learn to hear God's voice. Before I discuss how you and I can hear God's voice, I want to take a moment to examine some fundamental truths about God's will.
1. God's will is found "in Christ."
To know God's perfect will for your life, you must be in the faith. You must be a believer, "in everything, give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you"(1 Thessalonians 5:18). You cannot know God's will apart from Christ Jesus.
2. God's will is always good.
If it's not good, it's not God's will. Bad things can happen to good people in the natural way, but in the spiritual realm, God's will is always good. The Bible says, "And be not confirmed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:2). When God is involved, you can be in the midst of a problem and still have total peace. You can be going through a storm yet be calm. If there is any evil presence or demonic oppression, it's not good, and it's not God's will. If there is no peace, it's not God.
3. God's will must be sought.
You and I will not discover God's "will" unless we search for it. We are commanded to know God's will, for the word of God admonishes, "Be ye not unwise, but understanding what are the will of the Lord" (Ephesians 5:17). God's will become clearer to us as we mature in the ways of the Holy Spirit. The more we read the word and spend time in prayer seeking God's will, the more He responds.
Spiritual maturity also helps us to recognize when it's not God talking to us; Jesus made this clear, he stated that, "My Sheep hears My voice" (John 10:27). He is saying, in other words, that just as sheep recognizes the voice of the shepherd, true believers are attuned to the voice of God. This is increasingly the case of those long-time Christians, the more accustomed you are to the ways of God. A heightened knowledge of the word and growing familiarity with God's voice enables you to more readily recognize His leading.
Moreover, you learn that to hear God's voice better and discern His will for your life requires something more than passing or casual communication amid the frenetic pace of everyday life. In the familiar words of Psalm 23:1-3, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still water." It's difficult to hear God's voice in the midst of a storm. Therefore, we must heed the psalmist's direction to "be still, and know" (psalm 46:10). We must find time to be alone with God and to be quite in our hearts to listen better. Then, as we linger in His presence, will we best hear His still, small voice.
HEARING THE VOICE OF GOD
God speaks to us in a number of ways, each distinct and different, but regardless of how God chooses to speak owing to our prayers, according to His word, when we call upon him, he will answer (psalm 91:15).
I want to take a moment to look at the seven Ways God speaks to us in prayer.
Chapter 1
A REASON AND A SEASON
Have you ever considered what can happen when the anointing of the Holy Spirit flows through in releasing or delivering people from their problems through Jesus Christ? The first moment the precious anointing of the Holy Spirit touched my life was when I was being convicted of my sins, after hearing the preaching of the gospel I gave my life to Jesus Christ. It was my salvation experience. Next to my salvation, I cherish God's anointing upon my life more than anything.
I want you, as my friend and partner, to experience this same glorious touch, now more than ever. The reason is that you are God's child, and He has promised to anoint your life with ", fresh oil" for the word of God declares: "I shall be anointed with fresh oil"(psalm 92:10). This declaration of faith by the psalmist, king David, speaks of your authority as a believer. And when the fresh oil begins to flow over your life, seven incredible results are promised as follows:
1. Your spiritual eyes will be open: "Mine eyes also shall see my desire on my enemies" (psalm 92:11).
2. Your spiritual ears will hear: "Mine ears shall hear my desire of the wicked that rise up against me" (psalm 92:11)
3. Your life will flourish: "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree"(psalm 92:12) Due to the long roots of a palm tree, it can survive in a desert. The anointing of the Holy Spirit will make you thrive and flourish wherever you are.
4. You will have a long life: "He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon" (psalm 92:12). A cedar tree is known for its exceptional longevity. Your relationship with the Lord will last for eternity.
5. You will be abundantly blessed: "Those that be planted in the court of our God" (psalm 92:13)
6. " You will be planted and established: They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing" (psalm 92:14). Because of the anointing of the Holy Spirit upon their lives, there will never be an unfruitful time.
7. God will reveal Himself through you: "To shew that the Lord is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him" (psalm 92: 15). The Lord will use you to display His power and His glory to the world.
My dear partner, these seven incredible blessings are promised to you as the anointing of the Holy Spirit comes upon your life. As you draw close to our wonderful Lord Jesus, you will begin to experience His power and presence. This precious anointing of the Holy Spirit has different levels or dimensions, each with a specific purpose.
THE ABIDING ANOINTING
"Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you"(John 14:17).
When the disciple came to our wonderful Lord Jesus before His ascension into heaven, the scripture declared that "He breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost" (John 20:22). The Holy Spirit was "with the disciple as promised when Jesus breathed upon them."
The anointing of the Holy Spirit first comes upon us as believers before salvation through the conviction of sins, which causes us to cry out for deliverance from sin. And it is that anointing which causes us to seek the Lord for salvation. That is what the Lord meant by "dwelleth with you"
HIS IN-DWELLING PRESENCE
Once you come to the saviour, you will have His indwelling presence. You begin to grow spiritually as you read the word of God and spend time in prayer, it is the anointing of the Holy Spirit that enables you to live a victorious Christian life once you are born again. This is what the scripture meant in 1st John 2:20: "But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things." It is the anointing that enables you to receive the word of God and understand it. Remember, it is "not by mighty, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the lord of the host"(Zechariah 4:6).
THE CALLING FOR SERVICE
"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witness unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth"(Acts1:8).
