Inexplicable: How Christianity Spread to the Ends of the Earth: summary, description and annotation

The name of Jesus and his teachings captured peoples hearts and minds throughout much of the world long before Christianity was legal. Long before armies and governments protected or supported it, and then long after Emperor Constantines reign as many leaders misused it for their own gains or religious views. Christianity also survived brutal persecutions during many centuries, including the present. Its growth seems inexplicable.
While there are innumerable possible explanations for this, in the final analysis there are relatively few viable answers. One leading contender is that there really is something to the mystical power of the Holy Spirit, and the life-changing message of Jesus recorded in the New Testament. Another is, at the least billions of people have held passionate beliefs in Jesuss miraculous powers over life and death, and his eternal promises. The Pew Research Centers recent work supports the claim that Christianity is the only religion in the world with a major presence on every continent.
Inexplicable traces this remarkable spread of Jesuss followers, including many of the heroic actions from those believing in his deity, and those horrific actions of those misusing his teachings. The Gospels journey is ongoing, and its story remains an engaging one. From Coptic monasteries and the Roman Colosseum to a small church in Franklin, Tennessee or mega churches in Laos or Seoul, its a rich narrative. Whether standing in the Sistine Chapel, looking at a Nestorian stone in China, or a Christian school in Kigali, this narrative continues and here we provide its historic context.

Pattengales quick pace and winsome relatability effectually, and fairly, convey the dense and often complicated history of Christianity for anyone interested in learning more about the origin and perpetuation of their faith. Be it the pastor, the professor, the Sunday school teacher, the mother, the student, the layperson, or teenager, all can glean something from this book and hopefully be inspired by those who have gone to the ends of earth for the sake of Jesus Christ.

In this truthful and generous text, Dr. Jerry Pattengale has written an eminently readable, informative, and instructive book about the expansion and growth of the Christian faith in all the world. In his brilliant narrative, he tells a hard and difficult story, where the gospel message triumphs in spite of the monstrous flaws of many of its messengers, and because of the power of God that is in it, and of those who were most faithful in their witness to it even unto death.

Dr. Pattengale did it again! Taking history reading to a new level, this book is informative and easy to follow. If more history books were this well written and engaging, we would have a wave of students majoring in history!

Wow! Read this book. Jerry Pattengale has turned the story of the spread of Christianity into a hugely compelling tale. This is not some dusty volume filled with strange sounding names and ancient stories, its an amazing narrative that every believer should read.

My grandfather always said that the really smart people dont make the rest of us feel really dumb. Jerry is a really smart scholar; he writes in a way that everyone can understand. He makes history come alive and complex issues understandable.

I was inspired by Jerrys latest bookhe makes complicated Church history read like a great novel.

T he story of Christianity is grand on many fronts as it is the only religion with a major presence on every continent. We all benefit from ways of organizing the key developments and personalities in this remarkable history, one that is still unfolding. The book you are about to read serves this role. It provides an engaging outline of how Christs followers carried his message through the centuries and eventually to every continent.

Yes, to the ends of the earth.

Without overreaching, we follow the storyline of Christian history. For example, we know where some of the disciples traveled and the places of their martyrdoms. For most of them, however, we dont know for sure so we include the leading traditionsand call them such. We also dont talk about the triumph of Christianity, as if there were some cosmic competition that was settled. Rather, we see the amazing story of Christianitys humble beginnings and trace how it turned the world upside down. And, we see how it continues to influence leaders, institutions, and movements today.

From its inception, Christianity was an international movement. Distant magi visited the Christ child. His family fled to Egypt where eventually Christian communities would claim connections. Likewise, the prominent Coptic community would persist through the toughest of challenges, especially after the Islamic conquest. Monastic movements would spread from this area to have branches in Europe and worldwide. The unique Christian story among Ethiopians led to its regional persistence. Of course, throughout this expansion the Christians went with the Pentecost promise (Acts 2), the power of the Holy Spirit. Yes, in many ways Christianitys expansion is inexplicable. Faith enters in whenever we try to wrap our minds around supernatural engagement in a natural worlda fundamental Christian claim.
