In this six-session video Bible study (DVD/digital video sold separately), Judah Smith, bestselling author of Jesus Is_____, will help you and your group find peace of mind and lasting fulfillment by asking a different kind of question.

Because he knows that the health of the soul is too often overlooked in the busyness of everyday life, Judah trades the typical and surface-level How are you? for the question that gets to the heart of the matter: Hows your soul?

In the rush of living moment to moment, many of us find ourselves simply surviving, struggling daily with frustration, restlessness, boredom, and the rush to find ever-fleeting joy. But when we pause, we find the things that matter most in life are rooted in the health of the soul. Each of the six sessions asks us to deepen our exploration of what Judah calls the inside you.

  • When Is My Soul Home?
  • What Makes My Soul Healthy?
  • Why Does My Soul Have Hope?
  • Who Does My Soul Hold On To?
  • How Is My Soul Helped?
  • Where Is My Soul Headed?
  • This is an invitation to find lasting satisfaction by bringing your feelings into alignment with Gods truth, moving beyond surviving to thriving, and learning how to live each day with eternal significance.

The Hows Your Soul Study Guide includes video discussion questions, Bible exploration, and personal study and reflection materials for in-between sessions.

    CONTENTS

W elcome to the Hows Your Soul? small group Bible study! Im so excited youve decided to embark on this six-week journey. I believe it will have lasting impact on the health of your soul, on your walk with God, and on other key relationships in your life.

If youve already read the Hows Your Soul? book, you know why this topic means so much to me. For months now, Ive been captivated by the importance of a healthy soul. In part, I think its because Im getting older, and I want the years I have left to be even better than the years Ive lived. To be honest, though, its also because Ive personally experienced an unhealthy soul from time to timeand I dont want to live there.

Chances are, you know what Im talking about. Life has a way of overwhelming you with good news and bad news, with work and pleasure, with kids and jobs and deadlines and grief and success. Sometimes it feels unrelenting. Sometimes it feels like too much. And as a result, your soul can suffer.

My passion and my prayer is that through this study guide and the accompanying video, you will be able to take an honest look at the state of your soul. That can seem scary at first, but trust me, its well worth the effort. Its far better to ask the honest questions now than to try to figure out what went wrong after the fact.

We all have parts of our souls that need a bit of work. There is no shame in that. I believe God wants those who follow him to embody true honesty and acceptance in a world where secrets and facades are the norm. He wants us to create environments where we can all find the help we needwhere we can grow together through mutual support and encouragement.

I am so grateful for your willingness to follow Jesus and to let him lead your soul. I believe God has incredible things in store as you embrace the journey ahead! The following suggestions will help you get the most out of this small group study guide.

    GROUP SIZE

This study is designed for use in a group setting such as a Bible study, Sunday school class, or other small group gathering. Because the goal of the video and guide is to facilitate participation among all the attendees, the ideal group size is between five and fifteen people. If your group is much larger, consider breaking into two or more groups.

    MATERIALS NEEDED

Each participant should have his or her own study guide, which includes video teaching questions, small group discussion questions, and personal studies to deepen learning between sessions.

    FACILITATION

Each group should have a facilitator who is responsible for starting the video and keeping track of time during discussions and activities. Facilitators may also read questions aloud and monitor discussions, inviting the group to respond and ensuring that everyone has a chance to participate.

    PERSONAL STUDY SESSIONS

During the week, you can maximize the impact of the course with the personal studies provided. Each video session includes several short studies with accompanying questions that will help you think about and apply the weeks topic to your life. Each of these studies can be completed in about twenty minutes. The studies are personal and devotional in nature, so feel free to utilize them in whatever way works best for you and your schedule. You may wish to read one each day or two or complete the entire week in one sitting.

    WELCOME

Welcome to the first session of Hows Your Soul? Our goal in the next six weeks is to explore what it means to have a healthy soul. The apostle John wrote, Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul (3 John 2). We are going to explore what it means to be healthy and whole on the inside: our minds, our wills, and our emotions.

Before we begin, it is helpful to define what we mean by the term soul. David wrote in Psalm 103:1, Bless the L ORD , O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! In this verse, David equates his soul with his inner self: All that is within me.

Your soul is all that is within you. Your soul is not your eye color or your height. Its not your hairline or your waistline (thank God). Its not your name, your education, or your bank account. Your soul is the invisible but incredibly significant part of you that thinks, feels, and decides.

During this first week, we are asking the question, When is my soul home? We will look at the origin and creation of the human soul, which gives us a clue about where our souls can truly be at home, at rest, and at ease.

    VIDEO TEACHING

The following are a few key thoughts to note as you watch session one of the video. Use the space provided to jot down personal observations or applications.

It is possible to have everything look good on the outside but to be unwell, small, and unsuccessful on the inside. True success is not determined or gauged by the outside but rather by the inside. Muchif not mostof life is the result of who we are on the inside.

    [Your Response Here]

When God created Adam, he was just a form. He was just a body. It wasnt until God breathed his own life into him that he became a living soul, a living being. Our outside form isnt what makes us aliveour soul is what makes us alive.

    [Your Response Here]

Our souls come from the breath of God. We are living on the borrowed breath of God.

    [Your Response Here]

When it comes to our souls, we are often nomadic: our souls dont have a place to belong, a place to rest. They are restless and homeless. But if our physical bodies need a place to call home, how much more do our souls need homes?
