foreword

A friend of mine is a missionary in South Asia, where, despite persecution, the church is growing. He was recently telling me that many of the new churches are asking tough questions of would-be followers of Jesus to make sure they are counting the cost of becoming a Christian. Here are some of the questions:

  • Are you willing to leave your home?
  • Are you willing to lose your job?
  • Are you willing to forgive those who persecute you?
  • Are you willing to be beaten and imprisoned for your faith?
  • Are you willing to die for Jesus?

Were you asked questions like this before you decided to follow Jesus? I wasnt either. Maybe you were asked:

  • Are you willing to raise your hand in public?
  • Are you willing to repeat a prayer out loud?
  • Are you willing to change your Facebook status to Christ-follower?

There is nothing wrong with these questions, but isnt there something within you, like there is within me, that wants to be challenged more deeply? Im thankful for religious freedom and for the privilege of worshiping God without fear of persecution, but I think we all need to be willing to answer some harder questions.

This book asks some challenging questions that will help you to be honest with yourself about whether you just believe in Jesus or are truly following after him.

When reading a book about following Jesus, there is one really important question you should ask: Does the author follow Jesus?

You would think that would be a safe assumption. After all, if a person is going to write a cookbook, youd like to think the author is a pretty decent cook. If a person is going to write a book on diet and exercise, youd like to think the author is in good shape. But most of us have learned to be cynical enough to have some doubts. Just because someone has the right information doesnt make that person an expert.

This is what I love about the book Real . Jamie Snyder explains what a Christ-follower looks like and then challenges believers to live that out. But he doesnt just download information and tell you how to apply it, he tells stories of following Jesus that will inspire you to take risks and step outside your comfort zone.

So here is my question to you: Are you willing to read this book and have the courage to be honest with yourself about what it really means to follow Jesus?

Intermission

What you are going to find in the next section is a portrait. Not a painting or sketch or drawing, but nonetheless, a portrait. It is a portrait of the lifethe real lifeI have been alluding to.

Undoubtedly my word portrait will leave much to be desired. I might as well try to re-create the statue of David with my sons Play-Doh. But if nothing else, this portrait will serve as a shadow, or perhaps an outline, of the life to which we have been called to live.

If you conducted a man-on-the-street interview and asked people to use words to describe church, you would likely end up with a list like this:

Tame

Stingy

Predictable

Nice

Safe

Boring

Careful

Sadly, these words do describe some churches today, but not the first church, not Jesus church. Tame, stingy, predictable, nice, safe, boring, careful churches do not get accused of turning the world upside down. Maybe thats why the church today is rarely accused of turning the world upside down.

If you studied the book of Acts, you would have to come up with a very different list of words to describe the church. And when I say the church, I mean a people, not a place. Words like:

Unbridled

Daring

Rebellious

Risky

Relentless

Scandalous

Mad

I suppose I have some explaining to do. Ill keep writing. You keep reading.

12
Mad

Love .

No other word in the English language has been used and abused more. Not just by other people, but by me.

These are the things that I have said I loved over the last few weeks or so:

Chocolate shakes

Pepperoni pizza

P. F. Changs

The NFL

My wife (these are in no particular order)

My two sons: Cy and Cruz

The new socks I was given for Christmas

Yes, that is how I have used the word love lately. But before you wag your finger at me, make your own list.

See, its not just me.

Something has obviously gone wrong when we use the same word to describe our feelings about greasy, fattening foods and our spouses. How romantic. Love.

I have no authority over the English languagenot sure who does, but it seems like we need to create a new word for love, because now love means the same thing as like .

Before we were married, my wife actually did invent a new word. She more than liked me but wasnt ready to say she loved me (even though she did), so instead, one time she said, I lyve you. Ahhh . That moment brought to you by Hallmark. Maybe we should all just start using that word when we really, really, really like something but love would be too strong a word.

Let me go first. I lyve pizza. I dont think it will catch on.

Love has been twisted, tainted, diluted. The word, at least. The truth is, even in its purest form, the word love falls short of capturing the idea. Trying to reduce the awe and wonder of love down to a single expression is like trying to capture the Atlantic Ocean in a toy bucket. When it comes to communicating the power and essence of love, you need more than a word. You need words. Lots of them to even get close.
