Heavenly Father, You created my body to function in perfect harmony, and my immune system was intended to protect me from any outside invaders that would cause me harm. God, it is not Your will that my immune system is confused and attacking my thyroid gland, and that it is an unhealthy invader. I thank You for restoring order and peace within my body right now and that all of my bodily systems line up with Your Word. In Jesus name, amen.
Take an inventory of the disruptive agents to which you are exposed in your daily lifestyle.
What sources of plastic pollution do you encounter daily?
Is your mouth filled with silver (mercury) fillings?
What other disruptive agents and medications do you feel may be affecting your health?
Are you willing to trust God to help you change your lifestyle and lessen your health risk from environmental contaminants?
Chapter 3
Brighter and Brighter
Supplements
M any believe that Gods teachings are for our mind and spirit only. Yet, God created our entire beingbody, mind and spirit. If we allow Him, He will teach us wisdom to light a pathway of healing and understanding. The Bible says, For these commands and this teaching are a lamp to light the way ahead of you (Prov. 6:23).
God is determined to stop your enemies of sickness and disease from keeping you from His perfect plan for your life. Psalm 30:12 says, You refused to let my enemies triumph over me. O LORD my God, I cried out to you for help, and you restored my health.
No matter how dark your circumstances or physical symptoms may seem at the moment, when you look to God for help they get brighter and brighter. The way of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, which shines ever brighter until the full light of day (Prov. 4:18).
So, be encouraged, and get ready to start feeling much better, for there is much you can do to turn your situation completely around. You have already seen how lifestyle factors can make a great difference in how your thyroid functions. Lets shine the light a little brighter by taking a look at some natural substances God has placed in His great creation that can help you gain victory.
Necessary Nutrients for a Healthy Thyroid
Iodine
Iodine, from seawater, is a natural substance found in abundance throughout the earth. As weve seen, getting too little or too much iodine can dramatically impact thyroid health. Too much can lead to hyperthyroidism and can actually trigger the autoimmune response, and too little can lead to goiters and other thyroid problems. Low iodine levels are actually a leading cause of thyroid dysfunction in the world at large, although it is not as great a factor in developed countries such the U.S. and European countries where table salt is iodized.
Yet, many Americans who have banned all salt from their diets for health reasons are starting to experience problems. More and more bakeries and restaurants also feature low-salt or no-salt selections. A study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism in October of 1998 showed that the iodine levels measured in urine excretion had fallen by half compared to tests of earlier studies done for people living in the U.S. It cited that 12 percent of Americans had low iodine concentrations in their urine compared to 1994, when less than 1 percent of the population had low levels of iodine.
Dear friend, I am praying that all is well with you and that your body is as healthy as I know your soul is.
3 JOHN 2
The American Heart Association recommends that we get a teaspoon of salt every day (6 grams, which contains approximately 400 mcg of iodine).
Since natures primary source of iodine is seawater, the closer you live to the sea the better off you are, at least in respect to getting enough iodine in your body. If you live in the central plains or near the Great Lakes, then your body is dependent upon the iodine you receive in your table salt and food that comes from the sea.
If you are on a low-salt diet and rarely eat ocean fish and seafood, onions or dairy products, I recommend taking a daily multivitamin/ multimineral supplement that contains 150 mcg of iodine. Use iodized salt or, even better, use sea salt or Celtic salt. The RDA for adults is 150 mcg a day, and, fortunately, the usual daily intake in the U.S. is about 150 to 550 mcg per day.
The sick begged [Jesus] to let them at least touch the fringe of his robe, and all who touched it were healed.
MARK 6:56
Caution: Balance is very important where iodine is involved, for weve seen that it can be a double-edged sword. Too much or too little iodine can lead to thyroid problems. Therefore, do not take large doses of kelp or other supplements high in iodine since they may trigger hyperthyroidism.
Tyrosine
The thyroid gland actually needs two different nutrients from the diet: the first is iodine, and the second is tyrosine. Tyrosine is an amino acid that the body forms from the metabolism of the essential amino acid phenylalanine. In fact, the body makes most of the tyrosine it needs from phenylalanine, so tyrosine is not considered an essential amino acid to add to the diet, although it is helpful to do so.
Foods that are high in tyrosine include chicken, fish, soybeans, bananas, dairy foods, almonds and lima beans. Be sure to include plenty of these items in your regular diet in order to get enough tyrosine.
Lets take a look at some supplements that will give good results.
Super Supplements
If you have a thyroid disorder, or a borderline thyroid disorder, supplements can help bring your body back into the right balance. Here are some supplements you may take.
A good multivitamin/multimineral
Your multivitamin should contain vitamin A, vitamin B2, B6, B12, vitamin C and zinc. Moderate amounts of these substances are essential for making thyroid hormone. Zinc is essential, but it must also be balanced with copper in a 10:1 ratio. Its unwise to economize when it comes to vitamins, since quality varies widely among brands. The best brands generally will yield the best results. Divine Health Multivitamins is a high-quality brand. You can order it from my Web site at www.drcolbert.com.
Selenium
Selenium, an important antioxidant, is one of the most important nutrients your body uses to convert thyroid hormone to meet your bodys needs. Interestingly, Brazil nuts contain a whopping 840 mcg of selenium per ouncetwelve times as much as you need each day.
The RDA for selenium is 70 mcg, so check your label as dosages can vary widely from brand to brand.
Dosage: Take a multivitamin that contains at least 100 mcg of selenium, or take a selenium supplement. You may choose to simply eat a Brazil nut a day.
