MORE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT
Callanetics

Is CALLANETICS safe?

CALLANETICS is so safe that even eighty-year-olds can do these exercises. Originally developed for bad backs, CALLANETICS uses small and delicate movements consistently applied. The program has no sudden jerking or hard impact which can cause harm to the body.

Is dieting part of the program?

Dieting is not necessary for most people. Without shedding a pound, a person can wear clothing two sizes smaller. If you lose 10 pounds, it will look like 20.

Is CALLANETICS easy?

The exercises are hard workat first. But they make you feel SPECTACULAR! And one hour of CALLANETICS is equal to 24 hours of aerobic dancing in terms of tightening, pulling up, and visible results.

Do you have to start with a whole hour of exercise right away?

No. You can break an hour of exercises into 15-minute segments with the same dramatic results.

Will it really work?

WITHIN HOURS, YOU WILL HAVE THE ANSWER!

THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED

to my precious, darling mother, who faithfully massaged my legs three hours a day for five years;
to all the people around the world who were so concerned for my safety, for without their kindnesses I probably would have never made it home;
and to my students who have taught me so much and eased my readjustment into the American way of life.

CHAPTER ONE
Who Is Callan Pinckney and Why Is She Writing This Book?

CALLAN PINCKNEY IS not a celebrity, model, or movie star, nor is she a medical doctor with a string of degrees. She is a teacher, albeit unorthodox, of one of the most innovative exercise programs today. How she became a teacher is not so simple to explain. How she devised the program began somewhere between Savannah, Georgia, and Southeast Asia, sometime in the 1960s.

On paper, Callans life looks like the figment of a fertile imagination, a scenario for a movie script:

A ninth-generation American Southern debutante, Callan hopped a freighter bound for Germany in 1961 and hitchhiked around the world for the better part of ten years, completely missing the turbulent sixties in this country.

She shoveled snow in London, tracked migrating herds in Central Africa, painted the decks of a freighter as a member of its crew, sold peanuts table to table in a fashionable Tokyo rooftop restaurant, and taught British pronunciation to four hundred Chinese children in Hong Kong. These are but a few of her survival jobs.

Born with spinal curvatures (scoliosis and swayback), one hip higher than the other, and feet turned inward so severely that she wore leg braces to her waist for seven years of her childhood, Callan went on to study classical ballet for twelve years with a protg of the legendary Michel Fokine.

Today she teaches exercise to diplomats and ambassadors, recording stars, actors and actresses, housewives, doctors, as well as to business and professional people of all sizes, shapes, and ages.

Callan was presented to Savannah society at the 1959 Debutante Cotillion Her - photo 4

Callan was presented to Savannah society at the 1959 Debutante Cotillion. Her formal portrait shows her in an intricately beaded gown before a massive antique mirror. Within two years, she stepped through a looking glass of another sort and this traditional southern lifestyle was, for her, gone forever.

Descended from the same Pinckney family that was instrumental in the founding of this country, especially South Carolina, even helping to draft the Constitution of the United States, Callan comes from a long line of special achievers. At the age of seventeen, Eliza Lucas Pinckney was single-handedly responsible for finding the process that made indigo the most profitable export crop of the colonies for more than thirty years until the American Revolution severed our relationship with the primary consumer, Great Britain. George Washington was a pallbearer at her funeral. Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, her son, negotiated the Pinckney Treaty of 1795 with France, laying the groundwork for the purchase, less than a decade later, of the entire Louisiana Territory.

The United States of America was not the first country that the Pinckneys helped to settle. They were with William the Conqueror at the Norman Invasion in 1066. A British noblewoman quipped to a contemporary Pinckney family historian: My God, you Pinckneys cover the world!
