Welcome to this guide to help you breakthrough your fears and phobias and improve the quality of your life. You are here because you have made a decision to gain more knowledge and understanding about your particular condition, and I really want to congratulate you on taking the time to educate yourself about how to have your very own breakthrough. However, it is also important to know that much of our success and results is dependent upon what we do, and how willing we are to try new ideas and concepts. The old saying What you think is what you get is very true. When you look at phobias they are strong thoughts that we have. They seem real and look real, but really, these are thoughts in our heads that we believe are very real to us. I often think of ourselves as movie directors, creating and moulding our lives and experiences, but unlike a movie director that deletes scenes they do not like, we fail to recognise that we have the same ability. We also can delete and change our mental movie to one that is less intense and more harmonious. Im sure if I put a red hot burning poker in your hands you would soon drop it pretty quick, and go ouch, that hurt!! Ill let that go! or words to that affect.
Before reading, any further, I would like to offer the suggestion that everything that is happening in your world is caused by you and your thoughts, or another way of looking at things is your mind is like a computer. If you put junk in, you get junk out. If you believe xyz is going to happen and that you have xyz phobia, then you do, and it does not matter what anyone tells you, you believe it is real and life like to you. It is important you understand the previous sentence clearly if you are going to breakthrough your phobia. You also will have many reasons why you have this issue or phobia, you will probably get quite upset and irritated if someone was to challenge you and say, Hey, youre crazy, how can you have a phobia of xyz because none of us like to confront our own fears and phobias and be criticised for the phobia we have. The crazy thing is when we do have a scary phobia we push and fight with these thoughts and feelings and force them back down where they came from, because these are thoughts that we do not like.
You are probably wondering what authority I have to address these issues with you. My advice is based on both formal teaching and personal experiences. My phobia of dogs, which I had for many years, left me terrified and had a profound impact on my life. I am sharing this personal experience with you as a way of encouraging and motivating you on your own personal journey. When you go through this book, please take what feels right for you, and disregard what does not. You are your own best teacher and judge, and you know what is best for you. I do not make magical claims or suggest that this book is miraculously going to cure you of your phobia. I think we both know that getting over phobias takes time, commitment and real focus. Thank you and enjoy the book.
Well fear is something that terrifies us at that moment in time, and is something we generally try to avoid if we can. The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm. For example If I have a fear of the dark it means that I find the dark very unsettling, however when I take certain actions e.g. turn on some lights, these feelings subside and I become reassured. Fear is something we can generally manage and is often short lived. Another common example is of people who have a fear of public speaking, they may experience feelings of nervousness and anxiety, but are able to continue be it an unpleasant experience. Fear, because it is so common to all of us, is generally something we experience almost on a day-to-day basis. I am sure we can all relate to the example of waking up late in the morning and being fearful of what the boss might have to say. These are normal fears but they do not stop us from carrying out our every day functions.
So in this section we have learned that really fear is an unpleasant experience which we do not like however it is generally short lived, and doesnt affect our life to any great extent or for prolonged periods of time.
Task:
Just write down a few notes on what you have learnt about fear. How does this compare to what you experience as a fear?

Chapter 3: What Is A Phobia?
Well a phobia is something that has a very serious and profound impact on your life. It is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. If you have a phobia about something, you will not put yourself in that situation and will avoid this situation at all costs. Usually phobias create a very strong and powerful response; common symptoms may be severe panic, out of control behaviour, hyperventilation and mortal anxiety. The resulting effects can influence you both socially and mentally. You may find that you take excessive measures to avoid or limit the risk of this phobia from appearing in your life. For example if I have a phobia of dogs, it means that whenever I see a dog I would experience such severe terror that I freeze, my heart rate would go up, my behaviour would immediately change and I would get that strong adrenaline rush. Phobias are debilitating in nature, they cause the sufferer to believe they are in severe danger.
Unlike fears they do not allow the individual to continue to perform the task and are not necessarily short lived. Phobias can be more difficult to let go off and consequently be more difficult to cure, simply because they have such a strong hold on you. Unfortunately, we have all been programmed from a young age that having a strong sense of fear is a good thing and that it protects us. However, over time in some cases the fear gets out of control resulting in a phobia. People who experience phobias feel that they will never be free of their condition.
The truth is no matter how severe you think your phobia is, it is possible with the right intervention to overcome it. I know that may seem unrealistic and hard to believe, but the change is possible through techniques such as Hypnotherapy, NLP and your own commitment and focus. In the next section I will walk you through what I personally believe causes us to have phobias.
