I learned at a very early age that the lessons of the Bible can be readily applied to everyday life. Growing up the son of a pastor in rural Oklahoma, these lessons found their way into our family conversations. And those principles drive the decisions I make today: how to direct the business Ive been called to shepherd, how to treat employees, how to learn about and serve our customers in a God-honoring way.
Even though we had many children in our family and very few resources, my parents insisted that we conduct ourselves in a way that honored the Biblical path: love God above all, show love to others, help where you can and be content whatever your circumstances. I learned these principles in the classroom of our tiny home by watching my parents steward their time, talents and treasure with integrity and devotion. They were a tremendous example to me and my siblings as we saw them live out their faith seven days a week.
My first lessons in the retail business were learned in the classroom of McLellans Five and Dime in Altus, Oklahoma. My teacher was the proprietor of the store, Mr. T. Texas Tyler. He exhibited some of the same characteristics of my parents, and his humble approach to servant leadership deeply impacted my perspective on conducting business. Some years later I founded the Hobby Lobby chain with a $600 loan and the principles that I learned first from my parents and then from Mr. Tyler: Love God, treat people well and, above all, find a way to do what you do for the Lord.
How do you lead, manage or do business for the Lord? Whether you teach high school, work in an office, spend your days on the factory floor or lead a multinational company, God cares about how you lead. He has gifted you with an ability that reflects part of his image in you. And the guidebook for understanding that gift is in your hands right now.
The Bibles timeless leadership principles were exhibited by ancient Hebrew leaders such as Moses, Joshua, David, Solomon and the prophets. They were embodied in the person and work of Jesus Christ, the ultimate servant leader, whose story is vividly told in the New Testament. Throughout the text of Scripture, as youll see in the notes and features of this Bible, God has planted signposts that point toward his leadership principles.
The authors and editors of the NIV Leadership Bible have carefully crafted this Bible to help you to understand that leading Gods way and for Gods glory is the only path to true success. May God bless your reading and study as you immerse yourself in the pages of this Bible and as you examine your heart and learn how to lead by the Book.
