About the Author

James Endredy is a teacher, mentor, and guide to thousands of people through his books and workshops. After a series of life tragedies and mystical experiences as a teenager, he changed direction from his Catholic upbringing and embarked on a lifelong spiritual journey to encounter the mysteries of life and death and why we are all here. For over twenty-five years, he has learned shamanic practices from all over the globe while also studying with kawiteros, lamas, siddhas, roadmen, and leaders in the modern fields of ecopsychology, bioregionalism, and sustainable living. James also worked for ten years with Mexican shamanic researcher Victor Sanchez, learning to share shamanic practices with modern people.

James was given the name of Ulu Temai, or Ulu Temay (the spelling varies throughout the Wirrarika), which translates to new ray of the sun or new arrow of the sun. This name was an honor bestowed on him by the eldest shaman in Jamess Wirrarika community in recognition of his dedication to the shamanic path.

On a daily level, his experiences have inspired him to live a sustainable lifestyle as much as possible while still working within mainstream society. He writes, leads workshops, mentors private clients, visits schools and community centers, speaks at bookstores, and volunteers in his community. His books, including Ecoshamanism (Llewellyn, 2005), have thus far been published in four languages. James leads ceremonies and workshops related to the teachings of the First Shamans and the material in his books. For more information, visit his website at www.jamesendredy.com.

I never planned to write this book. That is to say, only a few years ago, the topic of 2012 was just beginning to rise significantly in the consciousness of people throughout the world, and the importance of this time period was still somewhat obscure. But now we can see interest in the implications of the 2012 time period all around us. International magazines, such as Time and National Geographic , as well as major television channels, such as the History Channel and Discovery Channel, are running feature stories and full-length programs having to do with 2012, the End of Days, catastrophic Earth changes, Armageddon, the Mayan calendar, and many other topics revolving around the great time of transformation we are living in: the period leading up to 2012.

It was a series of opportunities and synchronistic events that led me to write what you are now readingto put my energy toward sharing a positive approach in these times of change. For that is the encouraging information that I have received from both the First Shamans and my own research. Human consciousness is key to what will actually happen in 2012 and the years leading up to it. The positive message in this is that we are, for the most

part, in control of our destiny. But we need to change. By all indications, the human enterprise is out of control on this planet. The good news is that we humans are adaptable, and I believe that with wiser use of our technologies, more compassion between people, and greater education and understanding of the interconnection of all life, we are up for the challenges that lay ahead for us.

This book began with an invitation from Llewellyn to do another project with them after my Ecoshamanism book of 2005. Consequently, I was invited to participate in the 2006 INATS convention in Denver, and it was there that I had the fortune to spend time with some of the key people at Llewellyn, such as publisher Bill Krause and publicity manager Alison Aten. Even though publishing books is certainly a business, after spending just a few days with the Llewellyn managers and sales staff, I knew for sure that they truly love what they do and are intentionally engaged in making a positive difference in this world.

Upon returning home from the convention, I communicated with acquisitions editor Lisa Finander about various book ideas, and she tossed up the idea about a book on 2012 from a shamanic perspective. I liked the idea, but to be honest, at that time I had a few other more important books on my mind that I felt needed to come out.

The next afternoon, I taught my class at the Institute for Ecotourism and afterward joined some friends for a drink at the resort there. Well, wouldnt you know that a friend brought for me the April 3rd edition of Time magazine, which was all about how global warming is detrimentally affecting the biosphere, and one article revealed how James Hansen, NASAs chief climate scientist, was accusing the Bush administration of muzzling him when reporting on the dramatic effects of global warming and censoring him when his opinions differed with the presidents.
