THEY CALLED IT THEIR EIGHT TO TEN.
M om and Dad devoted the prime hours of their morning to lingering with Jesus. They each took their Bible, journal, devotional reading, and a cup of coffee out into the equatorial garden to spend extravagant time with Jesus. You could set your clock by it. This was the foundation of who they were and everything they did. I learned from my parents that the source of all fruitfulness in life is the ongoing presence of Jesuspresent through His Word and prayer.
When I was seven years old, my father challenged me to read through the Bible every year. I did so and have continued to do so for the past thirty-five years. Bible reading and reflection form the core of my abiding time.
I wrote this devotional over a period of one year from January 1 to December 31, 2013. The daily meditations are summaries of my daily abiding time. I wrote this devotional for my sons, but I hope that you will benefit from it as well. Each day includes readings from three chapters of the Old Testament, one chapter from Psalms, one chapter from the Gospels, and one chapter from Acts or the Epistles of the New Testament. The meditations will be most helpful if you follow the suggested readings.
My wife, Jennifer, and I minister in the Muslim world with the Live Dead community. This simply means we are committed to church planting among unreached people through multinational teams. The people groups remaining to be reached with the gospel are found in challenging contexts. We have to live dead if they are to cross over into eternal life.
Living dead is not original or unique to us. Christians across time have been called to the crucified life. Looking to Jesus, we stumble in their footstepsboth grinning and grimacing as He stamps His image upon us. Hopefully, this daily devotional will encourage you to do the same.
LIVING DEAD IS A GREAT JOY FOR US, ANDIF WE WILL BE FAITHFULIT WILL ALSO BE A JOY FOR THE ETHNOLINGUISTIC PEOPLE GROUPS CHRIST CAME TO REDEEM.
T he daily entries in this devotional each highlight an unreached people group for whom you can pray. These people groups are drawn from areas in the world where Live Dead currently has church planting teams (Africa and Eurasia). The statistics are drawn from the Joshua Project. The prayers included are called kingdom prayers as they are biblically based. The best way to have prayer answered is to pray what God wants us to pray. We do that by praying the injunctions of the Bible. Each daily devotion includes one kingdom prayer for you to pray over the UPG listed. Feel free to pray all twelve kingdom prayers over the UPG. In this case, we suggest a one-minute prayer for each of the twelve kingdom prayers for a total of twelve minutes of prayer over that UPG.
For example, if the daily featured UPG is the Rashaida of Sudan, Eritrea, and Saudi Arabia, you can:
1. Pray for laborers.
Jesus told us to pray that the Lord would raise up laborers (hard workers) for the harvest fields. Pray that God would raise up missionaries from all over the world to plant the church together among the Rashaida (Matt. 9:3738).
2. Pray for the conviction of sin.
A person is saved only through the knowledge of his sinful state and the subsequent repentance and turning to Jesus. Pray that the Rashaida would feel and know the burden of sin and come to Jesus for forgiveness and salvation (Matt. 11:2830).
3. Pray for the cross to be unveiled.
False religions and deceptive ideologies have blinded men and women throughout the world to the truths of the gospel. Please pray that God would unveil the cross and would remove the veil on the minds and spirits of the Rashaida (2 Cor. 3:1617).
4. Pray for faith and against fear.
The Bible says that God has given His followers a spirit of power. Pray that believers among the Rashaida would be set free from a spirit of fear and would boldly proclaim the truth of the gospel (2 Tim. 1:68).
5. Pray for the Word of God to rise.
Gods Word is so much more powerful than anything people can say; it is a mighty lion that needs to be unleashed. Please pray for the Word of God (in written, oral, musical, and dramatic forms) to be translated and to rise among the Rashaida (Isa. 55:1011).
6. Pray that the Spirit will be poured out on all flesh.
God promised to pour out His Spirit on all flesh, men and women, young and old, rich and poor. Please pray that God would pour out His Spirit on the Rashaida, that they would see dreams and visions of Jesus, and that they would be powerfully saved and empowered to be His witnesses (Joel 2:2832).
7. Pray that Jesus would unite the body of Christ.
Jesus wants His followers to be one. Please pray that God would unite the body of Christ. Pray that Christians from around the world would work together to reach the Rashaida and that the Rashaida would be joined to the body of Christ (John 17:2023).
8. Pray for good soil.
Pray that the hearts of the Rashaida would be like good soil, ready to hear the gospel and respond (Matt. 7:18; 1823).
9. Pray for peace.
The Bible tells us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Ps. 122:6) and to pray for all people (1 Tim. 2:14). Pray that the Rashaida would experience peace not only in their nation but also in their hearts. Pray for the peace that results when men and women are reconciled with God (John 14:27). Pray for men and women of peace among the Rashaida (Luke 10:6).
10. Pray for bold proclamation.
Pray that believers among the Rashaida would proclaim the message of the gospel clearly, making the most of every opportunity God places before them (Col. 4:25).
