Psychedelic Integration: Psychotherapy for Non-Ordinary States of Consciousness is a trailblazing guidebook for anyone interested in psychedelic-assisted therapy and integration.

When psychologist and psychotherapist Marc B. Aixal began fielding questions from people around the world seeking help integrating their own psychedelic experiences, he couldnt find a singular source of collected research and support. What began as an attempt to help others became Psychedelic Integration, a work that traces the evolution of psychedelic-assisted therapy and integration research from the 1960s to the present moment, explains therapeutic techniques and outlines a clinicians real-world observations on the deep work of healing.

Written for practitioners and the generally curious, this book offers 11 metaphors for understanding integration and concisely explains the seven dimensions of integration, which Aixal sees as part of a process inextricably linked to preparation and the psychedelic session experience.

Grounded in the idea that integration work serves two main objectives: maximizing the benefits of a psychedelic experience and dealing with adverse effects, Aixal maintains that understanding why an individual seeks integration support can inform therapeutic techniques. Psychedelic Integration outlines foundational practices like rest and nutrition, spiritual approaches including water rituals and tarot, embodied techniques of dance and singing, and frameworks including Holotropic Breathwork, Gestalt therapy and integration circles.

The author acknowledges that psychedelic experiences can be difficult and even traumatic, and he confronts that reality with compassion. In this book, Aixal shares stories and artwork created by some of his patients as they progressed through their own integration journeys.

Psychedelic Integration is an essential companion for practitioners, their patients, and those seeking integration work not as a solution but as a tool for self and collective discovery.

FOREWORD

In the April 2010 issue of Playboy, the American adult entertainment magazine, Steven Kotler published an article titled: The New Psychedelic Renaissance. The article began with the story of Mara, a 33-year-old woman who was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer a year earlier, a very unusual medical situation for someone so young. Mara was about to take 110 mg of MDMA in an underground session, hoping to work on the emotional situation she faced at the end of her life. The article echoed the therapeutic work with hallucinogens (we will discuss this term later) that had been done by underground therapists for the previous forty years, ever since these substances were classified as dangerous drugs and their use was banned. Likewise, the text also illustrated instances of LSD and psilocybin underground therapy, and no less importantly, it communicated to a general public how therapeutic research with these substances had returned, after forty years, to the domain of scientific research authorized by governmentsin this case, in North America.

The studies carried out by MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) with MDMAthe drug popularly known as ecstasyfor the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were already underway, as was the research with psilocybin studying its mysticomimetic potential, which could address the existential anguish suffered by people who were at the end of their lives. It could also serve people who wanted to abandon drug dependence, including alcohol and tobacco. After forty years of prohibition and being ostracized by the scientific establishment, even as they were still being used in recreational contexts or in underground therapies, these substances were coming back, with renewed interest, to the field of therapeutic research.
